Background: Listing patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) for liver transplant (LT) remains challenging especially due to the risk of alcohol resumption post-LT. We aimed to evaluate post-LT alcohol consumption at a Portuguese transplant center.

The onset of bipolar disorder (BD) secondary to a stroke event is a rare clinical entity. Although it may be related to specific regions of the brain, several other factors have been linked to its expression such as subcortical atrophy or chronic vascular burden. While precise locations and cerebral circuits involved in the bipolarity expression after stroke still need to be determined, their investigation represents an opportunity to study brain function and BD etiopathogenesis.

Background. Disulfiram, a drug used in the treatment of alcohol dependence, is an inhibitor of dopamine- β -hydroxylase causing an increase in the concentration of dopamine in the mesolimbic system. Second-generation versus first-generation drug-eluting stents for the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes and obstructive coronary artery disease.

Introduction And Aims: Randomized trials and registries have shown that drug-eluting stents (DES) have an overall better performance than bare-metal stents in patients treated in the setting of both ST-segment and non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes, mainly by reducing restenosis. Whether or not the use of newer second-generation devices (vs. first-generation DES) differs in these high-risk patients remains to be determined.

Maintenance of peripheral venous access and its impact on the development of phlebitis: a survey of 186 catheters in a general surgery department in Portugal.

This article reports the results of a clinical audit conducted to assess the minimum requirements for safe maintenance of peripheral intravenous catheters. The audit also determined the incidence of phlebitis and attempted to establish a causal relationship between some of the variables used to assess a catheter's maintenance status and the development of phlebitis.

Leadership and job satisfaction among Azorean hospital nurses: an application of the situational leadership model.

Aims: The aim of this study was to describe nurse managers' leadership behaviours, comparing them with staff nurses' perceptions of their leader's leadership, as well as to determine if leadership components affect job satisfaction among staff nurses.

Background: Understanding the leadership phenomenon using a detailed theoretical framework, such as the situational leadership model, allows for the deconstruction of leadership into small segments, thereby producing a vast but detailed picture of the process involved in leading people.

Method: This quantitative, descriptive, inferential and correlational study involved the participation of 266 nurses (managers and staff) from two public Portuguese Azorean hospitals.
