Background: Listing patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) for liver transplant (LT) remains challenging especially due to the risk of alcohol resumption post-LT. We aimed to evaluate post-LT alcohol consumption at a Portuguese transplant center.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study including LT recipients from 2019 at Curry Cabral Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal.

(1) Background: Patients with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) experience profound effects on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) that cannot be explained by objective indicators of mortality and morbidity. This study aimed to adapt the SLE Quality of Life (SLEQoL) questionnaire to the European Portuguese population and to assess its reliability and validity for patients with SLE. (2) Methods: Two independent translators translated the original version of the SLEQoL questionnaire into Portuguese.

Objective: School-aged children in São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal, are a population with a long history of iodine deficiency, and a recent governmental program for iodized salt (IS) consumption was implemented. This study investigated urinary iodine concentration (UIC), household and school IS consumption, and iodine-rich food intake in school-aged children.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, spot urine samples and dietary iodine intake were collected.

Nitrate-rich food can increase nitric oxide production and improve vascular and brain functions. This study examines the feasibility of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) testing the effects of prolonged consumption of different doses of dietary nitrate (NO) in the form of beetroot juice (BJ) in overweight and obese older participants. A single-blind, four-arm parallel pilot RCT was conducted in 62 overweight and obese (30.

This review summarises the association between serum carotenoids, serum retinoids and dietary intake outcomes with obesity/overweight and individuals with metabolic diseases with disturbances in lipid metabolism. Observational studies reporting dietary intakes and serum concentrations of carotenoids and retinol were collected from Medline and Web of Science. Mean differences were calculated between "cases" (classified as obese, overweight or having a metabolic disease with disturbances in lipid metabolism; i.

Background & Aims: In addition to findings from endoscopy, histologic features of colon biopsies have been associated with outcomes of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). We investigated associations between Geboes scores (a system to quantify structural changes and inflammatory activity in colon biopsies) and UC progression, and the time period over which this association is valid.
Methods: We analyzed data from 399 asymptomatic patients with UC enrolled in the ACERTIVE study, followed at 13 inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) centers in Portugal through 31 December 2019.

Objective: To evaluate symptomatic uterine fibroid outcomes following at least one course of ulipristal acetate (UPA) 5 mg/day therapy in the hospital setting, during the year 2017.
Study Design: A retrospective and descriptive analysis involving women with symptomatic fibroids was conducted in 15 hospital centers in Portugal in 2017 to assess fibroid size, bleeding control and hemoglobin levels following at least one course of UPA 5 mg/day. Secondary outcomes were the reasons for the treatment, type of surgery, fibroid classification, patient satisfaction with the treatment, and adverse events.

Background And Aims: The histological status of ulcerative colitis [UC] patients in clinical and endoscopic remission has gained space as an important prognostic marker and a key component of disease monitoring. Our main aims were to compare two histological indexes-the continuous Geboes score [GS] and the Robarts Histopathology index [RHI]-regarding their definitions of histological remission and response, and the ability of faecal calprotectin [FC] levels to discriminate between these statuses.
Methods: This was an analysis of three prospective cohorts including 422 patients previously enrolled in other studies.

Mitral valve cleft is a rare entity. However, it must be recognized as a differential mechanism for mitral valve regurgitation. 3D transesophageal echocardiography plays an essential role in the evaluation of single and multiple mitral valve clefts, improving morphological and functional assessment of the valve, with potential implications on surgical planning.

Objective: Histological remission is being increasingly acknowledged as a therapeutic endpoint in patients with UC. The work hereafter described aimed to evaluate the concordance between three histological classification systems-Geboes Score (GS), Nancy Index (NI) and RobartsHistopathologyIndex (RHI), as well as to evaluate their association with the endoscopic outcomes and the faecal calprotectin (FC) levels.
Design: Biopsy samples from 377 patients with UC were blindly evaluated using GS, NI and RHI.

Objectives: Compare final morphology of self-expanding and balloon-expandable prosthesis and association with paravalvular regurgitation (PVR).
Background: PVR after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) remains a frequent complication. A better understanding of the prosthesis geometry may be important to improve selection of the best device for each case and possibly reduce the rates of PVR.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is often associated with intraventricular conduction disturbances. We aimed to determine the association between implantation depth assessed by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and new-onset conduction abnormalities after TAVR.
Methods: Retrospective single-center study including patients consecutively submitted to TAVR, between August/2007 and October/2016, who underwent routine MDCT 3 months after the procedure.

Introduction: Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has progressively expanded to more complex anatomies, frequently outside manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU). However, the long term results of off-label use of EVAR remain largely undocumented. The aim of this paper is to examine the long term results of outside IFU EVAR.

Background And Aims: Mucosal healing and histological remission are different targets for patients with ulcerative colitis, but both rely on an invasive endoscopic procedure. This study aimed to assess faecal calprotectin and neutrophil gelatinase B-associated lipocalin as biomarkers for disease activity in asymptomatic ulcerative colitis patients.
Methods: This was a multicentric cross-sectional study including 371 patients, who were classified according to their endoscopic and histological scores.

Objective: This study sought to evaluate the impact of aortic valve (AV) and left ventricle outflow tract (LVOT) calcium on paravalvular regurgitation (PVR) and need for balloon post-dilatation (BPD) during transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Methods: The overall study population comprised 152 patients. Calcium mass and volume of AV and LVOT were estimated from contrast-enhanced multislice computed tomography imaging, using 3 thresholds for calcium detection [650, 850, and 1,050 Hounsfield units (HU)].

The onset of bipolar disorder (BD) secondary to a stroke event is a rare clinical entity. Although it may be related to specific regions of the brain, several other factors have been linked to its expression such as subcortical atrophy or chronic vascular burden. While precise locations and cerebral circuits involved in the bipolarity expression after stroke still need to be determined, their investigation represents an opportunity to study brain function and BD etiopathogenesis.

Introduction And Aims: Randomized trials and registries have shown that drug-eluting stents (DES) have an overall better performance than bare-metal stents in patients treated in the setting of both ST-segment and non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndromes, mainly by reducing restenosis. Whether or not the use of newer second-generation devices (vs. first-generation DES) differs in these high-risk patients remains to be determined.

Aims: The aim of this study was to describe nurse managers' leadership behaviours, comparing them with staff nurses' perceptions of their leader's leadership, as well as to determine if leadership components affect job satisfaction among staff nurses.
Background: Understanding the leadership phenomenon using a detailed theoretical framework, such as the situational leadership model, allows for the deconstruction of leadership into small segments, thereby producing a vast but detailed picture of the process involved in leading people.
Method: This quantitative, descriptive, inferential and correlational study involved the participation of 266 nurses (managers and staff) from two public Portuguese Azorean hospitals.
