This study was aimed to identify the most frequently observed pathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infections from outpatient urinary isolates obtained across seven different geographical regions in Türkiye and to determine whether the antibiotic resistance rates of these pathogens differ significantly between these regions. The study included patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with uncomplicated urinary tract infections and had positive urine cultures from March 2021 to August 2022, across 37 different centers in Türkiye. The participating centers were selected based on their use of the disk diffusion method, in line with the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines, to ensure standardization of urine culture data.

Background: Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) occurs in approximately 20%-30 % of patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). This is the most common complication of SAH and has a high mortality rate. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between hemoglobin (Hb) values and DCI and aimed to determine a cutoff Hb value to be used as a predictor of DCI.

Introduction: Rosacea, a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the central area of the face, is a complex condition whose mechanisms are still not fully understood. However, research has indicated a positive correlation between two molecules: hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). The levels of HIF-1α in rosacea patients have yet to be assessed.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to obtain real-life data on the use of antimyeloma agents, which significantly increase overall survival (OS) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients, in primary plasma cell leukemia (pPCL) patients with poor prognosis.

Materials And Methods: Data from 53 patients who were diagnosed with pPCL between 2011 and 2020 and who used at least one proteasome inhibitor (PI) and/or immunomodulatory (IMID) agent were analyzed retrospectively. Depending on the year of the pPCL diagnosis, 20% leukocytes or ≥2x10/L plasma cells in the peripheral blood was used as a diagnostic criterion.

Comparison of treatment methods in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Turk J Med Sci

October 2024

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Ankara Dışkapı Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of four surgical techniques—Pemberton osteotomy (PO), Salter innominate osteotomy (SO), open reduction (OR), and closed reduction (CR)—for treating developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in 101 hips across 82 patients from 2017 to 2023.
  • Results indicated that PO provided the best corrections in acetabular angles and had a lower incidence of avascular necrosis (AVN) compared to other methods, although some AVN still occurred across all treated groups.
  • The study concludes that accurate age-related acetabular measurements are crucial for treatment decisions, and early detection allows for effective conservative

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed radiological and anatomical measurements in 23 patients aged 18-45 with medial osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) who had no trauma history, comparing them to a control group of 27 individuals.
  • Significant findings included a correlation between medial OLT and decreased talar declination angle (P<0.001) and Meary-Tomeno's angle (P=0.003), suggesting these angles may contribute to OLT development.
  • The research concludes that lower positions of the talus in relation to the ground and first metatarsus might be a key factor in the formation of medial OLT in non-traumatic patients.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSI) in ICU patients can be life-threatening, and this study aimed to see how early adequate antibiotic treatment affects 28-day mortality rates for patients who survive at least one day after infection onset.
  • Using data from a multicenter study with 2,418 patients, researchers found that those who received adequate treatment within 24 hours had a lower 28-day mortality rate (32.8%) compared to those who were inadequately treated (40%).
  • The study concluded that inadequate antibiotic therapy within 24 hours contributes significantly to 28-day mortality, indicating that quicker treatment could greatly improve patient outcomes in cases of HA-BSI.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluates how demographic factors and comorbid conditions impact the prognosis and treatment of patients with laryngeal squamous cell cancer (LSCC) based on medical records from 2008 to 2019.
  • A total of 573 patients were analyzed, revealing that the majority were men and smokers, with significant survival rates indicating better outcomes for early-stage LSCC treated with endolaryngeal laser surgery (ELS) compared to radiotherapy.
  • It was concluded that ELS offers superior overall and disease-free survival rates for early-stage LSCC, while advanced cases showed better outcomes with total laryngectomy compared to chemoradiotherapy; recurrence risk was notably higher in certain categories of tumors.*
