Article Synopsis
  • Thrombocytopenia, or low platelet count, is linked to severe illness and higher mortality in critically ill COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
  • The study compared two groups of patients in the ICU: those with thrombocytopenia either at admission or later (Group 1) and those without (Group 2).
  • Results showed that Group 1 had worse clinical outcomes, including longer ICU stays, higher mortality rates, and increased inflammatory markers, suggesting thrombocytopenia indicates a more severe progression of COVID-19.

Novel marker for predicting the severity and prognosis of acute pulmonary embolism: platelet-to-hemoglobin ratio.

Biomark Med

August 2022

Department of Cardiology, Diskapi Yildirim Beyazit Training & Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, 06145, Turkey.

We investigated the ability of the platelet-to-hemoglobin ratio (PHR) to predict mortality and disease severity in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (APE). The severity of APE was classified as massive (high risk), submassive (intermediate risk) or nonmassive (low risk). PHR is defined as platelet count/hemoglobin count.

  • A cross-sectional study analyzed data from 836 patients, finding that 38.5% used DOACs, primarily rivaroxaban, due to challenges in maintaining effective INR levels with warfarin.
  • The findings suggest that DOACs are gaining popularity for real-life treatment, highlighting the significance of updated clinical data in guiding their use.
