Article Synopsis
  • Laser endoscopic enucleation of the prostate (EEP) is gaining popularity for treating benign prostatic obstruction, prompting interest in same-day discharge (DCS) after the procedure due to its cost-saving benefits and reduced infection rates.
  • A systematic review of 15 studies found that laser EEP, particularly holmium laser, shows positive improvements in patient outcomes, with DCS success rates between 35.3% and 100% and low complication rates.
  • Overall, the findings suggest that laser EEP is a viable same-day discharge treatment option, offering better functional results and fewer complications for selected patients compared to traditional discharge methods.

The ABCs of antiphospholipid syndrome.

Arch Rheumatol

June 2023

Barbara Volcker Center for Women and Rheumatic Diseases, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY, USA.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a thromboinflammatory syndrome characterized by thrombotic, microvascular, obstetric, or non-thrombotic events in the setting of persistent antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), namely anticardiolipin antibody (aCL), anti-β2 glycoprotein-I antibody (aβ2GPI), and lupus anticoagulant (LA). The diagnosis of APS requires careful assessment of the aPL profile, the clinical phenotype, and additional risk factors. The standard management of aPL-related thrombosis is anticoagulation, which is not effective for microvascular and non-thrombotic events.

Cir Cir

September 2023

Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Dıskapi Yildirim Beyazit Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences Turkey, Ankara, Turkey.

Objective: To conduct unbiased research into the quality and reliability of videos published on YouTube on the subject of smell dysfunction and treatment through two Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialists using three different tools.

Methods: The videos were separated into two groups (reliable: Group 1; non-reliable: Group 2) according to whether or not the content was scientifically reliable, proven, accurate, and useful, as determined by two ENT specialist physicians. The DISCERN reliability tool, Global quality scale (GQS), and JAMA scoring system were used as video scoring tools in the evaluations.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 55-year-old woman was diagnosed with elastofibroma, experiencing a painful, palpable mass on her right thigh for a year, following previous surgery for a femur fracture.
  • - MRI imaging revealed a soft-tissue mass in the vastus intermedius muscle, characterized by a mixture of fatty and fibrous components, with different intensity signals on T1 and T2-weighted images.
  • - A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of elastofibroma, a rare benign soft tissue tumor.

Purpose: There is a lack of studies in the literature on effects of Virtual Basket (VB) and Bubble Blast (BB) laser pulse modulations of the Ho:YAG laser on tissue. We aimed to compare the effects of standard modulation (SM), VB, and BB pulse modulations of Ho:YAG laser on kidney tissue.

Methods: An ex vivo experiment was conducted using veal kidneys.

Background: Chronic urticaria (CU) is a systemic disorder which is characterized by recurrent wheals and/or angioedema lasting more than 6 weeks. Sex hormones have been suggested to play a role in CU pathogenesis, however, their clinical implications have not been adequately described in the literature.

Objective: To determine whether conditions that change sex hormone levels such as puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause affect the course of CU.

To compare the surgical outcomes of Muller muscle conjunctival resection (MMCR) and levator advancement (LA) in patients with mild to moderate blepharoptosis. A retrospective review of patients who underwent surgery for mild to moderate ptosis between 2015 and 2020 was performed. The degree of ptosis was graded based on the amount of upper eyelid drooping: mild ≤ 2 mm and moderate < 4 mm.

Background: In this study, we aimed to assess the central corneal epithelial thickness (CET), central corneal stromal thickness (CST), and total central corneal thickness (CCT) thinning relationships with dry eye development monitoring and underestimated measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients treated with timolol, dorzolamide, and brimonidine.

Methods: This longitudinal cohort study included 106 patients with POAG. All patients underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination.

Article Synopsis
  • The article discusses a rare case of a 74-year-old man with diffuse follicular variant papillary thyroid carcinoma that metastasized to the pituitary gland, leading to complications like visual field defects and hormonal deficiencies.
  • Diagnosis and confirmation of the cancer involved imaging, cytological examination, and a total thyroidectomy, which revealed the nature of the tumor and its aggressive behavior.
  • Treatment included surgery for the pituitary mass, radioactive iodine therapy, and initiation of sorafenib, which resulted in a notable decrease in tumor markers, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and multidisciplinary care in managing such complex cases.

Insight is a continuous and multidimensional phenomenon, including awareness of having an illness, the presence of symptoms and accurate symptom attribution, the need for treatment, and the consequences of treatment. Good insight into illness is associated with better adherence to treatment, better cognitive, psychosocial, and vocational functioning along with less symptom severity, decreased relapses, and hospitalizations. Several tools are used for insight evaluation.

Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is primarily responsible, the importance of triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) has also been recognized. The present study investigated the effect of the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), in which atherogenic and protective lipoproteins were evaluated together, on the initial flow in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction.
