Cellular adhesion enables communication between cells and their environment. Adhesion can be achieved throughout focal adhesions and its components influence osteoblast differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Because cell adhesion and osteoblast differentiation are closely related, this article aimed to analyze the expression profiles of adhesion-related proteins during osteoblastic differentiation of two hMSCs subpopulations (CD105(+) and CD105(-)) and propose a strategy for assembling bone grafts based on its adhesion ability.

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that has acquired several mechanisms of resistance to multiple groups of antibiotic agents and has been widely employed as a model organism for the study of biofilm formation. Many P. aeruginosa structures embedded in the extracellular matrix, such as exopolysaccharides (EPS), flagella, and type-IV pili (T4P), have been associated with biofilm formation.

Infections with Brucella ceti and pinnipedialis are prevalent in marine mammals worldwide. A total of 22 California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were examined to determine their exposure to Brucella spp. at San Esteban Island in the Gulf of California, Mexico, in June and July 2011.

Background: Down syndrome (DS) or trisomy 21 is the most common genetic cause of mental retardation with the clinical presentation of a series of well-defined characteristics. Advanced maternal age has been associated with DS.
Methods: The databases of all the certificates of live births and fetal deaths in Mexico were combined.

Human fetal mesenchymal stem cells can be isolated from the amniotic membrane (AM-hMSCs) by enzymatic digestion. The biological properties of this cell population have been characterized; however, few studies have focused on the presence of stem cell subpopulations and their differentiation potential. The aim of the present study was to isolate homogeneous AM-hMSC subpopulations based on the coexpression of surface markers.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common gastrointestinal diagnoses seen by primary care providers and gastroenterologists. Proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 have been found increased in IBS patients. Cytokine gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL-8 and IL-10 have not been assessed in Mexican IBS patients.

The intestinal protozoan parasite Blastocystis is one of the most common parasites worldwide in humans and, although its ability to cause human disease has been questioned, some reports have demonstrated that this microorganism is associated to the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and to a proinflammatory response, in which the expression of some cytokines is unregulated. Since inflammatory cytokine gene polymorphisms might have a role in the pathophysiology of IBS, we assessed the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for interleukin (IL)-8 and IL-10, in previously collected DNA samples from IBS patients and controls, with or without Blastocystis infection. IL-8+396(G) and IL-10-1082 (A) alleles (p=0.

In recent times, some common "non-pathogenic" parasites, such as Blastocystis and Dientamoeba fragilis, have been associated to the aetiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), while host pro-inflammatory cytokine gene polymorphisms might have a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Therefore, Blastocystis subtypes (ST), D. fragilis and gene promoter single nucleotide polymorphisms of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in IBS patients and controls were studied.

Chinchilla laniger has been reported as an experimental definitive host for Taenia solium; however no information about its suitability and yield of gravid tapeworm proglottids containing viable and infective eggs has been published. In total 55 outbred female chinchillas were infected with 4 cysticerci each; hosts were immunodeppressed with 6 or 8 mg of methyl-prednisolone acetate every 14 days starting the day of infection and their discomfort was followed. Kinetics of coproantigen ELISA or expelled proglottids was used to define the infection status.

Background: In 1992, the United States Public Health Service, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United States Institute of Medicine recommended periconceptional intake of 400 microg of folic acid (FA) in order to reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTD) by 70%. Our objective was to assess among pregnant women the periconceptional intake of FA and to assess the level of knowledge among health professionals regarding the benefits associated with FA intake as a preventive measure of NTD.
Methods: We designed a prospective and cross-sectional study to assess certain sociodemographic and reproductive health characteristics, knowledge of periconceptional intake, benefits of FA intake among pregnant women and among health workers.

Taenia solium cysticerci recovered from naturally infected pigs from Mexico, Honduras and Tanzania show a clonal structure and local lineages with probable events of genetic recombination without genetic flow within them, as revealed by RAPD. To evaluate genetic polymorphism from cysticerci recovered from experimental infections, 4 pigs were infected with T. solium eggs obtained from tapeworms released by 3 human carriers, a 10-year-old female, a 25-year-old female, and a 44-year-old male, the 4th pig was infected with a mixture of eggs from the 3 tapeworms.

No epidemiologic study for cystic echinococcosis in México has yet been described. The objective of this work was to determine the prevalence and distribution of human echinococcosis in a community of the state of México and its probable risk factors. A cross-sectional study was performed; household census was used to randomly select houses.

Taenia solium causes human neurocysticercosis, a public health problem in Mexico and other developing countries. Surprisingly, tapeworm carriers are very rarely found and in necropsy studies practically no tapeworms have been reported. In this paper we analyze the possibility that, after the death of the host, tapeworms could easily be destroyed in the intestine.

The current study was designed to evaluate a tool for the self-identification of tapeworm carriers. Clinical and animal health care practitioners and schoolteachers were trained regarding the life cycle, risk factors, and control measures related to infection with Taenia solium. More than 120 small glass bottles with a few tapeworm segments fixed in formaldehyde and an instructional guide were distributed among all clinical practitioners (physicians and nurses) working in health centers.

Two recombinant Taenia solium oncosphere antigens, designated TSOL18 and TSOL45-1A, were investigated as vaccines to prevent transmission of the zoonotic disease cysticercosis through pigs. Both antigens were effective in inducing very high levels of protection (up to 100%) in three independent vaccine trials in pigs against experimental challenge infection with T. solium eggs, which were undertaken in Mexico and Cameroon.

Genetic variability among Taenia solium isolates was studied in 160 cysticerci from 6 pigs, 4 from Mexico, 1 from Honduras, and 1 from Tanzania. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis performed with 4 commercial primers showed 88% polymorphic loci and an average heterozygosity of 0.077; however, several alleles were fixed within each isolate.
