A parabolic potential that confines charge carriers along the growth direction of quantum wells semiconductor systems is characterized by a single resonance frequency, associated to intersubband transitions. Motivated by fascinating quantum optics applications leveraging on this property, we use the technologically relevant SiGe material system to design, grow, and characterize n-type doped parabolic quantum wells realized by continuously grading Ge-rich Si Ge alloys, deposited on silicon wafers. An extensive structural analysis highlights the capability of the ultra-high-vacuum chemical vapor deposition technique here used to precisely control the quadratic confining potential and the target doping profile.

We present a theoretical investigation of guided second harmonic generation at THz frequencies in SiGe waveguides embedding n-type Ge/SiGe asymmetric coupled quantum wells to engineer a giant second order nonlinear susceptibility. A characteristic of the chosen material system is the existence of large off-diagonal elements in the tensor, coupling optical modes with different polarization. To account for this effect, we generalize the coupled-mode theory, proposing a theoretical model suitable for concurrently resolving every second harmonic generation interaction among guide-sustained modes, regardless of which tensor elements it originates from.

The phytochemical study of apolar and medium polarity stem bark and leaves extracts afforded twenty-nine compounds, including three new sesquiterpenes (1: -3: ) and one new α-ionone glycoside (4: ). All compounds were characterized by means of 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS data. Furthermore, a precise structural analysis was performed, employing a combined density functional theory (DFT)/NMR approach to elucidate the compounds configuration.

The salivary microbiota of Italian and sub-Saharan African individuals was investigated using Nanopore sequencing technology (ONT: Oxford Nanopore Technologies). We detected variations in community composition in relation to endogenous (ethnicity, sex, and diplotypic variants of the gene) and exogenous (sensitivity to capsaicin) factors. The results showed that , , , , , and are the most abundant genera, in accordance with the literature.

Goji berry is acknowledged for its notable medicinal attributes and elevated free radical scavenger properties. Nevertheless, its susceptibility to mechanical injuries and biological disorders reduces the commercial diffusion of the fruit. A hyperspectral imaging system (HSI) was employed to identify common defects in the Vis-NIR range (400-1000 nm).

The past ice sheet dynamics and the timing of retreat events in the paleo-record in the Ross Sea is an issue still few understood. In order to contribute to this topic, we provide a multiproxy data from marine sediment archives (cores and box cores) collected in three sites in the Central Basin (Western Ross Sea, Antarctica). Each site recorded different environments, affected by different oceanographic conditions and sedimentary regime.

Although global vaccination campaigns alleviated the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in terms of morbidity and mortality, the ability of the virus to originate mutants may reduce the efficacy of vaccines, posing a serious risk of a renewed pandemic. There is therefore a need to develop small molecules capable of targeting conserved viral targets, such as the main protease (M). Here, a series of benzisoselenazolones and diselenides were tested for their ability to inhibit M; then the most potent compounds were measured for antiviral activity in vitro, and the mechanism of action was investigated.

Most single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scanners employ a gamma camera with a large scintillator crystal and 50-100 large photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In the past, we proposed that the weight, size and cost of a scanner could be reduced by replacing the PMTs with large-area silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) pixels in which commercial SiPMs are summed to reduce the number of readout channels. We studied the feasibility of that solution with a small homemade camera, but the question on how it could be implemented in a large camera remained open.

Registers collecting data from clinical practice (real world data) have gained increasing interest in recent years in the scientific, administrative, and regulatory fields. The value of longitudinal data collection in deepening knowledge about a specific pathology and its healthcare complexity is increasingly recognized. This article describes the development, organizational structure, and technical characteristics of the Italian Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders Register (RISM).

We investigate the nanoheteroepitaxy (NHE) of SiGe and Ge quantum dots (QDs) grown on nanotips (NTs) substrates realized in Si(001) wafers. Due to the lattice strain compliance, enabled by the nanometric size of the tip and the limited dot/substrate interface area, which helps to reduce dot/substrate interdiffusion, the strain and SiGe composition in the QDs could be decoupled. This demonstrates a key advantage of the NHE over the Stranski-Krastanow growth mechanism.

Although instantaneous interactions are unphysical, a large variety of maximum entropy statistical inference methods match the model-inferred and the empirically measured equal-time correlation functions. Focusing on collective motion of active units, this constraint is reasonable when the interaction timescale is much faster than that of the interacting units, as in starling flocks, yet it fails in a number of counterexamples, as in leukocyte coordination (where signaling proteins diffuse among two cells). Here, we relax this assumption and develop a path integral approach to maximum-entropy framework, which includes delay in signaling.

Introduction: To assess nicotine-containing products (NCPs; heated tobacco products and/or electronic cigarettes) use in relation to conventional smoking.
Methods: "LOST IN ITALY" ("LOckdown and Lifestyles IN ITALY") and "LOST IN TOSCANA" cross-sectional surveys estimated lifestyles changes before, during, and after the lockdown in a representative sample of the Italian population. A Poisson regression model was used to estimate prevalence ratios of NCP use according to socio-demographic, mental distress, and smoking variables.

The United Nations forecast a significant shift in global population distribution by 2050, with rural populations projected to decline. This decline will particularly challenge mountain areas' cultural heritage, well-being, and economic sustainability. Understanding the economic, environmental, and societal effects of rural population decline is particularly important in Europe, where mountainous regions are vital for supplying goods.

The insufficient taking into account of groundwater as a basis for implementing protection measures for coastal wetlands can be related to the damage they are increasingly exposed to. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the pertinence of combining hydrogeological tools with assessment of pollutant fluxes and stable isotopes of O, H and N, as well as groundwater time-tracers to identify past and present pollution sources resulting from human activities and threatening shallow groundwater-dependent ecosystems. A survey combining physico-chemical parameters, major ions, environmental isotopes (O, H, N and H), with emerging organic contaminants including pesticides and trace elements, associated with a land use analysis, was carried out in southern Italy, including groundwater, surface water and lagoon water samples.

We present a review of the latest framework achievements in geoarchaeological sciences applied to microstratigraphic and biomolecular studies of prehistoric archaeological contexts, highlighting the importance of musealized archaeological stratigraphies. We assess how today's scientific and technological accomplishments can be tailored for archaeological human ecology studies with analytical ensembles that provide unprecedented results. Sampling and processing workflows originating from resin consolidation and thin section micromorphology of undisturbed blocks of archaeological soils and sediments, guarantee subsampling accuracy at the micrometre scale granting access to individual components otherwise impossible to target: the achievable information yield makes even the smallest soil samples potential sources of pioneering discoveries.
