Digestive Disease Research Center, Digestive Disease Research Institute, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Shariati Hospital, Tehran, Iran.

Background: Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) has been shown to have associations with several diseases including cancers. Previous studies have investigated the effect of GGT levels on the gastrointestinal (GI) cancer incidence. We aim to systematically investigate these studies to provide better insights into the interrelationship between GGT and GI cancers.

Background: Biological medications have played a significant role in maintenance therapy for Crohn's disease (CD), but some cases become refractory to these agents. Methotrexate (MTX) appears to be a cost-effective and readily available drug for enhancing the effectiveness of maintenance therapy when used in combination with anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapy in such cases. However, its effectiveness is still to be established.

The current approaches for detecting most colorectal polyps and early neoplasms lack sufficient sensitivity and specificity, potentially hindering treatment and ultimately reducing survival rates. Here, we performed a metagenomic analysis to identify microbiome markers in stool samples from patients with early-stage colorectal cancer (CRC). We compared the composition of gut microbiota between patients with CRC and healthy individuals, specifically focusing on patients with early-stage CRC, defined as those without core mutations (KRAS, BRAF) for CRC diagnosis, stable microsatellite instability, and distant metastasis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effects of combining a fasting mimicking diet (FMD) with flaxseed supplementation on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in 100 patients over 12 weeks.
  • The research involved four groups: a control group, a flaxseed group, an FMD group, and a combination group, measuring various health indicators like liver enzymes and blood lipids.
  • The findings showed that while both FMD and flaxseed led to improvements in liver health indicators, the combination of the two did not offer additional benefits compared to using either method alone.

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection is influenced by both virological and host factors. A total of 5,920 CHB patients were classified into four groups based on HBV seromarkers: three-generation families (CHB grandmother, mother, and child), two-generation families (CHB mother/child pairs), individuals recovered from HBV infection, and a control group. Serological markers, viral load, liver function tests (LFT), HBV mutations, HLA-DQ variations, cytokine polymorphisms, and liver stiffness measurements (LSM) were analyzed using FibroScan.

Introduction: The discovery of gene editing techniques has opened a new era within the field of biology and enabled scientists to manipulate nucleic acid molecules. CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering has revolutionized this achievement by successful targeting the DNA molecule and editing its sequence. Since genomic changes are the basis of the birth and growth of many tumors, CRISPR-Cas9 method has been successfully applied to identify and manipulate the genes which are involved in initiating and driving some neoplastic processes.

Background: While cardiovascular disease (CVD) polypills have demonstrated significant benefits in preventing CVD events by managing CVD risk factors and improving patient adherence, their effects on blood glucose levels, an important risk factor for CVD, remain unknown.

Methods: We analyzed data from the PolyIran-Liver trial, which involved 1,508 participants aged 50 and above. Of these, 787 were randomly assigned to receive a polypill (consisting of aspirin, atorvastatin, hydrochlorothiazide, and valsartan), while 721 received usual care as the control group over a five-year period.

Article Synopsis
  • * Overlapping DGBI patients tend to have more severe gastrointestinal symptoms and a higher psychosocial burden, influenced by various factors such as gut motility, brain function, immune response, and genetic markers.
  • * Recent research indicates that alterations in the gut microbiome may play a crucial role in the mechanisms of DGBI, which could help refine diagnostic and treatment approaches for better patient outcomes.

Objectives: Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is routinely administered after autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT) to decrease the duration of neutropenia and diminish the incidence of febrile neutropenia. Nevertheless, the most advantageous timeframe for administering G-CSF in the transplantation setting remains elusive.

Material And Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 200 patients diagnosed with hematological malignancies who underwent auto-HSCT between July 2017 and January 2022.

Gender and biological sex have distinct impacts on the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Estrogen deficiency is known to predispose female mice to T2D. In our previous study, we found that a high-fat, high-sucrose diet (HFHSD) induces T2D in male mice through the miR-10b-5p/KLF11/KIT pathway, but not in females, highlighting hormonal disparities in T2D susceptibility.
