Introduction: Thoracobiliary fistula (TBF) is a rare and highly morbid complication of hepatic trauma. There is a paucity of literature regarding incidence, disease course, and treatment. This study identifies etiologic factors and outcome patterns in patients at risk for TBF.

Purpose: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is associated with congenital heart disease (CHD) and index newborns reportedly may experience cardiac arrhythmia disorders [Tella et al.-Pediatric Critical Care Medicine 2022]. This study analyses, details and reports contemporary outcome metrics of CHD and cardiac rhythm disease (CRD) in CDH babies attending a university surgical centre.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by low levels of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. Even though SMN is ubiquitously expressed, the disease selectively affects motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness. Even among motor neurons, certain motor units appear more clinically resistant to SMA.

Rationale: Pheochromocytomas typically arise in the adrenal medulla, whereas ectopic pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas commonly occur near the abdominal aorta, bladder, mediastinum, and head. Diaphragmatic pheochromocytomas are exceedingly rare, and there is limited surgical experience with their treatment.
Patient Concerns: In Case A, the subject is a 45-year-old male, while in Case B, the subject is a 59-year-old female.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality, necessitating advancements in cardiac tissue engineering platforms for improved disease modeling, drug screening, and regenerative therapies. The chief challenge to recapitulating the beating behavior of cardiomyocytes is creation of the circular stress profile experienced by hollow organs in the natural heart due to filling pressure and integrated strategies for intercellular communication to promote cell-to-cell connections. We present a platform featuring addressable arrays of nanogrooved polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) diaphragms for cell alignment and circular mechanical stimulation, with embedded silver nanowires (AgNWs) for electrical cues, so that cardiomyocyte functionality can be assessed under these synergistic influences.

Different muscles exhibit varied susceptibility to degeneration in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neuromuscular disorder. Extraocular muscles (EOMs) are particularly resistant to ALS progression and exploring the underlying molecular nature may deliver great therapeutic value. Reactive aldehyde 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) is implicated in ALS pathogenesis and ALDH3A1 is an inactivation-resistant intracellular detoxifier of 4-HNE protecting eyes against UV-induced oxidative stress.

The stomach has a rich blood supply; for this reason, acute gastric necrosis is a rare clinical condition and needs a high index of suspicion, especially in those patients having no history of an eating disorder and no signs of gastric distension on radiological investigations. We report on a 23-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency department with a one-day history of severe abdominal pain and multiple episodes of vomiting. On examination, his heart rate was 110 beats per minute.

Parasitic myoma is a relatively rare disease in which one or more leiomyomas form outside the uterus; however, the detailed causes are unknown. Few sporadic reports are available, and per our research, the maximum number of parasitic myomas reported to date was 26, and almost all cases were treated by surgical resection. We report a rare case of numerous parasitic myomas in the abdominal cavity, possibly including an intrathoracic lesion, which could not be resected completely.

Diaphragmatic dysfunction is an important contributor to hypercapnic respiratory failure, but its presence is often challenging to determine at the bedside. Diaphragm ultrasound provides an opportunity to evaluate the function of the diaphragm noninvasively by evaluating the following parameters that can help define diaphragmatic dysfunction: diaphragm excursion, diaphragm muscle thickness, and thickening fraction. Its evaluation has the potential to assist with diagnosis of respiratory failure, provide prognosis, and assist with patient monitoring and should be considered as part of an internal medicine physician's and emergency physician's skill set.

The use of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in respiratory disease pandemics such as H1N1-influenza and SARS-CoV-2. This surge has emphasized the importance of clear therapy recommendations, improved accessibility to ECMO technology, established ECMO teams, and structured networks to ensure access to specialized care throughout the course of the disease for patients with severe ARDS. Although the initiation criteria for VV-ECMO are well defined, treatment strategies while on ECMO regarding e.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a prominent etiological factor underlying the onset of end-stage kidney disease, which is characterized by the presence of microalbuminuria. Recent studies have found that high glucose can induce mitochondrial dysfunction and ferroptosis in podocytes, leading to renal impairment and proteinuria. Triptolide was extracted from traditional Chinese medicine Hook F.

Objective: To compare pre-extubation physiological characteristics and ultrasound variables between patients intubated for COVID-19 compared to a clinical population and those intubated for other reasons.
Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) for more than 48 h. Patients were divided into two groups: those intubated for COVID-19-induced ARDS and those intubated for other clinical reasons.
