Objectives: Determining post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage (PTH) risk factors is crucial for preventing it. The aim of the study was to analyse results of coagulation tests and preoperative family and medical history of coagulation disorders in order to establish if they have predictive value for PTH.
Methods: In 222 patients aged 15-60 years, values of APTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time), prothrombin/INR ratio and platelet count as well as medical history were analysed and 15 episodes of secondary PTH occurred.

Unlabelled: Electroglottography in the follow-up of bilateral vocal fold palsy.
Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine if electroglottography provides useful information concerning vocal perturbations within the glottis in the follow-up of patients with bilateral vocal fold palsy.
Methodology: Electroglottography was performed in 8 patients with bilateral vocal fold palsy (aged 43-77 years; mean, 62.
Unlabelled: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials and caloric tests in infants with congenital rubella.
Objective: Congenital rubella is rare due to maternal vaccination, but vestibular function can be markedly impaired in affected infants. Currently, vestibular testing is not routinely performed in infants.

Objective: The ototoxic action of systemic therapy with aminoglycosides, used in vital infections in infants, is well recognized. Nevertheless, the routine examination of the infants' inner ear does not include vestibular tests. The purpose of the study was to evaluate vestibular function in a group of infants before and after administration of aminoglycosides, using caloric tests and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs).

The incidence of dysphonia in healthy elderly people is high. In individuals with iatrogenic vocal-fold paresis following thyroid surgery, serious aggravation of vocal skills contributes to impaired quality of life and requires proper management. Electroglottography is a common method for providing noninvasive measurements of glottal activity, yielding reliable indicators of glottal closing instants.

Objective: A large negative deflection with a 3-4 ms latency within the auditory brainstem response has been reported in some profound hearing loss ears under intense stimuli in adult subjects. The wave has been termed the N3 potential or acoustically evoked short latency negative response and it is assumed to be a vestibular-evoked potential. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials and the acoustically evoked short latency negative response in infants with a functionless cochlea and normal or impaired semicircular canal.

Objective: Seventy percent of genetic deafness occurs without associated phenotypic characteristics and is termed nonsyndromic hereditary hearing impairment, analyzed by numerous genetic loci. Many forms of nonsyndromic hereditary hearing impairment are secondary to diverse cochleosaccular dysfunctions. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate vestibular function in a group of infants with hereditary nonsyndromic deafness using caloric tests and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials.

Objectives: The ototoxic action of systemic therapy with aminoglycoside antibiotics leading to the loss of inner ear hair cells is well recognized. The mitochondria-mediated pathway of apoptosis may play a role in inducing the apoptosis of vestibular hair cells due to aminoglycoside toxicity. Aminoglycosides are, nevertheless, routinely used for treatment of vital infections in neonatologic departments.

Unlabelled: Pathological changes of the sinuses and the nasal bones are rarely examined sonographically. However, both acute and chronic sinusitis in maxillary and frontal sinuses and fractures of the nose could all be diagnosed correctly by diagnostic A-mode ultrasound, which is of clinical importance if children or pregnant patients are examined. The aim of the study was to analyse the reliability of A-mode ultrasonography in diagnosing sinusitis and nasal bone fractures, compared to results of CT, X-ray and clinical symptoms.
