Background: Research on the relationship between dietary phytochemical intake and the anthropometric indices as well as the diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remains inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the associations of dietary phytochemical index (DPI) with the novel anthropometric indices and the severity of DFUs.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 339 adults with type 2 diabetes.

Chronic prostate inflammation in patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) correlates with the severity of symptoms. How inflammation contributes to prostate enlargement and/or BPH symptoms and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we utilize a unique transgenic mouse model that mimics chronic non-bacterial prostatitis in men and investigate the impact of inflammation on androgen receptor (AR) in basal prostate stem cells (bPSC) and their differentiation in vivo.

This study investigates the impact of habitual late calorie intake on glucose metabolism in adults with overweight or obesity and diet or metformin-controlled prediabetes or type 2 diabetes independently of body weight, fat mass, energy intake or diet composition. Participants (n = 26) were classified as Later Eaters (LE) if ≥45% daily calories were consumed after 5 pm and Early Eaters (EE) if not, based on daily caloric intake assessed over 2-wk. EE and LE did not differ in anthropometrics or daily energy intake, but LE consumed more carbohydrates (p = 0.

Background: Any abnormal change in thyroid hormone levels leads to thyroid disorders, including hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, goiter, and so on. Recent studies have reported an increasing prevalence and incidence of thyroid disorders worldwide. This study aims to determine the hypothyroid prevalence, incidence, and risk factors related to this disorder.

Background: This study presents estimates for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) burden and attributable risk factors in Iran from 1990-2019, using data from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study.
Methods: This study reports prevalence, incidence, death, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years of life lost (YLLs), and years lived with disability (YLDs) of T2DM in Iran, by sex, age, and province, from 1990 to 2019. We also present the T2DM burden attributable to risk factors.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was one of the most prevalent comorbidities among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Interactions between different metabolic parameters contribute to the susceptibility to the virus; thereby, this study aimed to rank the importance of clinical and laboratory variables as risk factors for COVID-19 or as protective factors against it by applying machine learning methods.
Method: This study is a retrospective cohort conducted at a single center, focusing on a population with T2DM.

Background: Ultra-processed foods mainly have high energy content and density and low nutrients. Unhealthy lifestyles mainly develop cardiovascular diseases and, as a result, unhealthy food patterns.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and the risk of novel cardiovascular disease (CVDs) in type-2 diabetes mellitus patients (T2DM).

Background And Objectives: Diet plays critical roles in modulating maternal metabolic health in pregnancy, but is also a source of metabolic-disrupting phthalates and their replacements. We aimed to evaluate whether the effects of better diet quality on favorable maternal metabolic outcomes could be partially explained by lower exposure to phthalates/replacements.
Methods: At 13 weeks gestation, 295 Illinois women (enrolled 2015-2018) completed a three-month food frequency questionnaire that we used to calculate the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)-2010 to assess diet quality.

Background: Physical activity and sleep are established modifiable lifestyle factors, but the optimal time of the day of these behaviours for health is unknown. This study examined the independent and joint associations of diurnal patterns of physical activity and sleep with all-cause mortality.
Methods: This prospective cohort study included 6,673 participants who have attended the accelerometer assessment in the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES).

Background: Whole food plant-based diet (WFPBD), minimally processed foods with limited consumption of animal products, is associated with improved health outcomes. The benefits of WFPBD are underexplored in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The primary objective of this analysis is to evaluate the association between WFPBD on glycemia in individuals with T1D.

Osteoporosis becomes a global public health concern due to its rising prevalence and substantial impact on life quality. Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, SM) has been firstly recorded in Shen Nong's Herbal Classic, and is frequently prescribed in conjunction with other herbs for the management of osteoporosis. This systematic review aims to comprehensively analyze the recent advances of SM on osteoporosis in traditional Chinese clinical uses and preclinical investigations.

Background: Dementia among younger people is rapidly emerging as a global health concern; however, comprehensive research on its shifting burden trends remains insufficient.
Methods: Data on the prevalence, incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with dementia occurring in individuals <70 years were extracted from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021. Average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) were calculated to assess trends in age-specific rates (ASRs), including age-specific prevalence rates (ASPRs), age-specific incidence rates (ASIRs), age-specific mortality rates (ASMRs), and age-specific DALY rates (ASDRs) while young-onset dementia (YOD) burden trends were analyzed.

Background: Although several genetic biomarkers have been reported in the tocilizumab (TCZ) response in rheumatoid arthritis, no studies have addressed the pharmacogenomics effect of TCZ in COVID-19.
Methods: In this prospective longitudinal study, 95 individuals with severe COVID-19 were selected between 2020-2022. The recovery process was measured at 24 h, 48 h, and 10 days before and after taking TCZ.

Background: The relationship between salivary α-amylase activity (sAAa) and susceptibility to cardiovascular disorders lacks a definitive consensus in available studies. To fill this knowledge gap, the present study endeavors to investigate this association among overweight/obese otherwise healthy Qatari adults. The study specifically categorizes participants based on their sAAa into high and low subgroups, aiming to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the potential link between sAAa levels and cardiovascular and inflammation markers in this population.

Background/objectives: This study investigated the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and gastric cancer (GC) risk, while also examining the interaction of genetic factors with lifestyle variables including the nutrient and bioactive compound intake in Korean adults of a large hospital-based cohort.
Methods: We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) comparing GC patients ( = 312) with healthy controls without cancers ( = 47,994) to identify relevant genetic variants. Generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) was employed to detect SNP interactions between diets and lifestyles.

Obesity and its metabolic complications are associated with lower grey matter and white matter densities, whereas weight loss after bariatric surgery leads to an increase in both measures. These increases in grey and white matter density are significantly associated with post-operative weight loss and improvement of the metabolic/inflammatory profiles. While our recent studies demonstrated widespread increases in white matter density 4 and 12 months after bariatric surgery, it is not clear if these changes persist over time.

Background: HIV clinical guidelines recommend hypertension detection and management to lower cardiovascular disease risk, but these have not been effectively implemented for people living with HIV (PWH). Addressing this implementation gap requires community-engaged implementation studies focused on addressing implementation barriers specific to the HIV care context.
Methods: This protocol describes a type 2 effectiveness-implementation hybrid study conducted in nine primary care clinics in Johannesburg.
