Objective: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy occurring in children. Copy number alterations (CNA) like PAX5, CDKN2A/2B, PAR1 Region, ETV6, IKZF1, BTG1, and RB1 gene deletion are important genetic events that define and prognosticate B-cell ALL. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate associations of CNA with induction phase remission status in childhood B-cell ALL.

Chronic inflammation is a crucial driver of carcinogenesis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Several studies have investigated the prognostic significance of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in PDAC patients, obtaining conflicting results. Nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), specificity protein 1 (Sp1), and c-Jun are known as the transcription factors of the gene.

People living with HIV (PLHIV) are considered a high-risk population for developing a severe form of COVID-19. Vaccination is still one of the most important modalities in combating the disease due to the lack of an effective treatment. This multicenter study was performed from September to December 2021 with the aim to analyze the intention of PLHIV to receive the COVID-19 vaccination based on an integrated behavior model (IBM) in Indonesia.

Even though the combined use of ultrasound (US) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is recommended for the surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the utilization of AFP has its challenges, including accuracy dependent on its cut-off levels, degree of liver necroinflammation, and etiology of liver disease. Though various studies have demonstrated the utility of protein induced by vitamin K absence II (PIVKA-II) in surveillance, treatment monitoring, and predicting recurrence, it is still not recommended as a routine biomarker test. A panel of 17 experts from Asia-Pacific, gathered to discuss and reach a consensus on the clinical usefulness and value of PIVKA-II for the surveillance and treatment monitoring of HCC, based on six predetermined statements.

Article Synopsis
  • Most patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have a poor survival rate, and the study investigates how nutritional status impacts treatment response and overall survival in these patients.
  • The study followed 174 patients with stage II-IV NSCLC over two years, revealing that only a small percentage achieved a complete response to treatment, and the median survival was 12 months.
  • Findings indicated that being male and overweight or obese are linked to lower survival rates, regardless of other factors like age, disease stage, and baseline health.

  • - Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men, necessitating a biological marker for better treatment outcomes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, particularly in Indonesia.
  • - A retrospective cohort study analyzed various blood test results (e.g., hemoglobin, leukocytes, tumor markers) to assess their impact on the survival rate of NSCLC patients.
  • - Significant findings indicated that poor prognostic factors include advanced performance status, late TNM stage, high white blood cell counts, low platelets, and other lab abnormalities, with the need for more research on their correlatives.

Incidence and severity prediction score of COVID-19 in people living with HIV (SCOVHIV): experience from the first and second waves of the pandemic in Indonesia.

AIDS Res Ther

October 2022

Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jl. Diponegoro no. 71, Jakarta, 10430, Indonesia.

Background: People living with HIV (PLHIV) have higher risk of COVID-19 infection and mortality due to COVID-19. Health professionals should be able to assess PLHIV who are more likely to develop severe COVID-19 and provide appropriate medical treatment. This study aimed to assess clinical factors associated with COVID-19 severity and developed a scoring system to predict severe COVID-19 infection among PLHIV.

  • The study investigates the role of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) oncoproteins (specifically EBNA1 and LMP1) and immune markers (CD4, CD8, FOXP3) in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer to understand their association with tumor progression.
  • 23 nasopharyngeal cancer samples were analyzed, revealing a moderate correlation between LMP1 and tumor volume, a strong correlation between CD8 levels and tumor volume, and a moderate correlation between FOXP3 and tumor volume, while no correlation was found for neck nodal metastases.
  • The findings suggest that larger primary tumors were linked to increased CD8 markers, indicating a possible dysfunction in CD8 T cells,

May 2022

Department of Internal Medicine, Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta, IDN.

Article Synopsis
  • Anemia is a prevalent blood disorder in older adults, particularly in Indonesia, where a lack of studies has left a gap in understanding its impact on muscle strength in this demographic.
  • The study aims to assess anemia prevalence among Indonesian elderly citizens aged 60 and older and explore its relationship with handgrip strength using data from a large sample size from the Indonesian Family Life Survey-5 (IFLS-5).
  • Findings reveal that 38.8% of analyzed individuals have anemia, with a significant increase in prevalence among those aged 80 and above, and indicates a positive correlation between lower hemoglobin levels and decreased handgrip strength.

  • The study aimed to systematically review and analyze the risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) transformation in adult patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), focusing on specific gene mutations.
  • A comprehensive literature search identified 14 relevant articles, revealing that mutations in the SRSF2, DNMT3A, IDH, and RUNX1 genes were linked to an increased risk of AML transformation in these patients.
  • The findings suggest that while some mutations (like U2AF1) do not significantly affect transformation risk, others notably increase the likelihood, indicating the importance of genetic profiling in MDS management.

  • The study aimed to assess the impact of leukapheresis on early mortality in adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and hyperleukocytosis, as previous findings were inconclusive.
  • Researchers conducted a systematic review up to October 2021, analyzing data from various medical databases and focusing on studies comparing early mortality in patients treated with leukapheresis versus those who were not.
  • Results from eleven eligible studies indicated no significant difference in early mortality between the two groups, suggesting that leukapheresis does not improve early outcomes for these patients.

  • Iron overload is a significant issue in thalassemia patients, particularly those dependent on blood transfusions, which can exacerbate oxidative stress as measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) levels.* -
  • A study involving 63 adult patients analyzed MDA levels before and after blood transfusions and found no significant change or correlation between MDA and iron overload markers like serum ferritin (SF) or transferrin saturation (TS).* -
  • The results suggest that, despite blood transfusions increasing iron levels in thalassemia patients, there is no corresponding rise in oxidative stress as indicated by MDA levels.*

  • Leukostasis is a severe condition that can occur in acute myeloid leukemia patients with high white blood cell counts, and leukapheresis is one treatment option being considered.
  • This study evaluated whether combining leukapheresis with chemotherapy improves survival rates compared to chemotherapy alone in these patients over a 28-day period.
  • Results showed no significant difference in survival between the two groups, with the median survival for chemotherapy only at 25 days and chemotherapy plus leukapheresis at 20 days, raising doubts about the effectiveness of leukapheresis for this condition.

Purpose: Hematotoxicity monitoring in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is critical to preventing life-threatening infections and drug discontinuation. The primary drug that causes hematotoxicity in ALL children is 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). Genetic variability of the drug-metabolizing enzymes of 6-MP, thiopurine -methyltransferase (), is one factor that might increase the susceptibility of children to hematotoxicity.
