Prevalence and predictors of functional gastrointestinal disorder among the undergraduate students of Bangladesh.

Objective: This study aimed to address this knowledge gap by investigating FGID prevalence and its predictors among undergraduate students in Bangladesh.

Design: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 01 August 2023 and 31 January 2024 among 1,019 undergraduate students. Data were collected using a web-based survey containing questions on socio-demographics, the Rome IV questionnaire, the insomnia severity index, the perceived stress scale 4, the patient health questionnaire, and the smartphone addiction scale.

Brain Abscess: A Comparison of Surgical Outcomes between Conventional Burr Hole Aspiration and Endoscope-Assisted Evacuation.

Background:  Brain abscesses are a major health problem with significant morbidity and mortality rates. The objective of this study was to compare the surgical efficacy of endoscope-assisted evacuation of a brain abscess with that of single burr hole aspiration in a tertiary health care center.

Methods:  This single-center nonrandomized clinical study was conducted during the period from July 2020 to December 2021.

Background: Rising incidence of cancer is a challenging form of seeking help to start treatment, especially in a pandemic situation. Treatment in due time may reduce the time interval of treatment-seeking, which influences the survival of breast cancer patients. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the pandemic on treatment delays among breast cancer patients in Bangladesh.

Sociodemographic and Clinico-laboratory Profile of Expanded Dengue Syndrome: Experience from a Tertiary Hospital of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Dengue is endemic in more than a hundred countries throughout the tropics. The classic presentation of dengue fever has expanded its horizon by involving different organ systems, and these system-specific presentations pose a diagnostic dilemma. The objective of this prospective observational study was to evaluate the sociodemographic, and clinical profile of expanded dengue syndrome (EDS) patients admitted to a tertiary hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Alvarado versus RIPASA Score for the Diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis.

The aim of the present study was to compare the sensitivity between Alvarado and RIPASA score for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis patients. A comparative study was conducted in the Dhaka National Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh from July 2015 to December 2015. The study was approved by the institutional ethical committee.

Influence of height on blood pressure and hypertension among Bangladeshi adults.

Background: Recent studies have reported that height is inversely associated with blood pressure and hypertension. However, there is lack of comprehensive findings from Bangladesh in this regard.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the association between height and blood pressure in a Bangladeshi population.

Data analytics for novel coronavirus disease.

This paper describes different aspects of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), presents visualization of the spread of the infection, and discusses the potential applications of data analytics on this viral infection. Firstly, a literature survey is done on COVID-19 highlighting a number of factors including its origin, its similarity with previous coronaviruses, its transmission capacity, its symptoms, etc. Secondly, data analytics is applied on a dataset of Johns Hopkins University to find out the spread of the viral infection.

Patient Characteristics Associated With Medication Adherence to Anti-Diabetic Drugs.

The aim of the present study was to assess the patient characteristics associated with medication adherence to anti-diabetic drugs. This observational, cross sectional study was conducted from January 2016 to June 2016 among patients attending at endocrine outpatient department of the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and Medicine outpatient department of the Community Based Medical College Hospital, after obtaining requisite consent from the patients. Once the consultation by the physician was over, the patients were interviewed.

Visceral Adiposity Index Score is the Better Predictor of Clinical and Coronary Angiographic Severity Assessment than Other Adiposity Indices in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is one of the leading causes of death throughout the world and obesity especially visceral adiposity is one of the important concerns globally due to its huge impact on coronary artery disease particularly on ACS. There are several traditional methods like BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR etc. but none of these can measure visceral fat accurately.

Immune Response against Hepatitis B virus after Pentavalent Vaccination in Children.

This study was done to know the real status of immune response to Hepatitis B vaccine among the pentavalent vaccinated children as per EPI schedule of Bangladesh. It was prospective observational study done in the EPI corner of Paediatric OPD of Dhaka National Medical College & Hospital (DNMCH), Dhaka from July 2015 to July 2016. Sixty (60) children ranging from 9 months to 2 years of age, who received pentavalent vaccination (Hepatitis B + DPT + Hib) according to EPI schedule, were included.

Chikungunya-dengue co-infection during pregnancy requiring preterm Caesarean section: first case report from Bangladesh.

We report the first case of chikungunya-dengue co-infection during pregnancy requiring emergency Caesarean section (CS) because of fetal distress in a Bangladeshi primigravida. Though previously unreported, this situation may become increasingly common.

Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern of Bacteria Isolated From Various Specimens of Patients with Hematological Malignancy.

Infection is a life threatening complication in patients with hematological malignancy. So, proper treatment of infection with suitable antibiotic is very important in these patients. The aim of this study was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria isolated from various specimens of patients with hematological malignancy, so that, an appropriate regimen of empiric antibiotic treatment can be established for these patients.

Background. Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a benign histiocytic proliferative disorder of unknown etiology. This rare condition commonly causes massive cervical lymphadenopathy.

Comparative Study of Clinical and Sonographic Estimation of Foetal Weight at Term.

A cross sectional comparative study was conducted at Dhaka National Medical College, Dhaka from January to June 2012, to observe the accuracy of clinical and ultrasonographic estimation of foetal weight at term in our environment. Seventy five pregnant women who fulfilled the inclusion criteria had their foetal weight estimated independently using clinical and ultrasonographic methods. Accuracy was determined by percentage error, absolute percentage error and proportion of estimates within 10% of actual birth weight (birth weight fetus of +10%).

Uroflowmetry before and after transurethral resection of prostate for bladder outlet obstruction.

This prospective study evaluates the effectiveness of uroflowmetry to follow up the patients of benign prostatic hyperplasia treated by transurethral resection of prostate. Total sixty eight patients of 50 to 70 years age group attending for the treatment of BPH with bladder outlet obstruction in the department of Urology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Shahbag, Dhaka were recruited for the study. All the TURP's were performed by experienced urologist.

In the present work, restrain stress induced changes in serum lipid profile and haemoconcentration and effects of sympathetic blocker on it were observed. For this purpose, 24 male rats (Long Evans Norwegian Strain) were taken and were divided into four groups, consisting of 6 rats in each group. Group I was control, group II was stressed but non treated, group III was stressed and treated (treated with carvedilol an adrenoceptor blocker), and group IV was stressed and treated (treated with distilled water).

Effects of substance P on spontaneous contraction in the flexure region of the guinea pig colon.

Effects of Substance P on spontaneous contractions of the circular muscle of the flexure region of guinea pig colon were studied by mechanical tension recording. Substance P (3 nM-10 nM) produced tonic contraction associated with phasic activities but the contraction was found stronger at higher concentration. Verapamil (3 microM), a voltage dependent L-type Ca(2+) channel blocker completely blocked the spontaneous activities and also Substance P induced contraction.
