Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic cancer presents challenges such as unusual symptoms, rapid progression, and a lack of reliable early diagnostic methods and effective treatments.
  • Research indicates that exosomes (tiny vesicles secreted by cells) could play significant roles in diagnosing and treating pancreatic cancer, as they may serve as less invasive liquid biopsies and drug carriers.
  • While current studies show promise for using exosomes in early diagnosis and monitoring, more research and clinical trials are needed before they can become standard tools for managing pancreatic cancer.

Objectives: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may induce life-threatening complications and lead to death in the patients.

Method: The aim of this study was to describe a predictive model for the disease outcome (length of hospitalization and mortality) by using blood parameters results at the admission time of 201 patients with positive RT-PCR test for the infection. Variables including; age, sex, comorbidity risk factors, the length of hospitalization, and 25 blood parameters results at the time of admission were considered.

Background/aim: B19 virus (B19V) is a single-strand DNA virus that has specific tropism to erythroid progenitor cells (EPCs). The virus enters the cells via P antigen and coreceptors and induces infection and cell apoptosis. GATA1 has a high expression in EPC and is a critical transcription factor for the cells development and differentiation.

Article Synopsis
  • * Thirty male Wistar rats were used in the experiment, divided into groups receiving either gentamicin, beta-carotene, both, or control treatments, with tests done on serum and tissues to evaluate hepatorenal function.
  • * Results showed that beta-carotene significantly reduced markers of liver and kidney damage (like SGOT, SGPT, creatinine, and urea levels) compared to gentamicin alone, suggesting it may be beneficial as an additional treatment for patients receiving gentamicin.

Like their natural counterparts, chimeric antigen receptor-engineered cells are prone to suppression by inhibitory signals, such as PD-L1, expressed by tumors or suppressor cells in the tumor microenvironment. Consequently, they become impaired, resulting in immune cell exhaustion, tumor progression, and resistance to other therapies. In this study, we developed an anti-PD-L1-CAR NK cell with efficient activity and a notable PD-L1-specific response toward tumor cell lines.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effects of 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU), a coumarin derivative, on ischemic stroke (IS) using a rodent model, focusing on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • - After inducing IS in Wistar rats using middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), it was found that 4-MU treatment significantly reduced neurological deficits, infarct size, and neuronal loss, while regulating key inflammatory markers and proteins in the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway.
  • - The results suggest that 4-MU holds potential as a therapeutic agent for ischemic stroke by mitigating injury and inflammation, indicating a promising avenue for future treatments.

Background: Some studies have indicated a notable association between obesity and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS), while others have not reported. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis to explore the association between obesity and the risk of PAS.

Methods: To explore the association between obesity and PAS through observational studies, we conducted a systematic search across PubMed, Web of Science, Google scholar, and Scopus databases up to March 30, 2024.

Background: Osteoporosis and osteopenia considered as severe problems in Beta thalassemia major (BTM) that can lead to bone fractures. We aimed to investigate bone mineral density status and the laboratory parameters related to bone metabolism in BTM patients and compare the statically differences between the mentioned parameters in the patients with or without bone fractures.

Methods: The results of laboratory parameters including; Hemoglobin (Hb), Calcium (Ca), Vitamin D (Vit D), Phosphorus (P), Magnesium (Mg), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Ferritin (FER), Serum Iron (SFe), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), T3, T4 and Parathyroid Hormone (PTH), and BMD (by using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) method) were investigated in 143 BTM patients from thalassemia center of Dezful University of Medical Sciences in 2023.

  • A study reviewed the impact of heat and cold waves on mortality in the Middle East, identifying a significant link between heat waves and increased all-cause mortality along with cardiovascular deaths.
  • Meta-analysis results indicated that elderly individuals and men are more vulnerable to heat-related mortality, with relative risks of 1.31 and 1.33, respectively.
  • The findings suggest the need for planning response strategies to heat waves and highlight the importance of future research on specific health conditions and healthcare outcomes.
