Hiding terrestrial objects from aerial monitoring has long been an important objective in national security and public safety. However, the diversity of terrestrial environments raises great challenges to traditional camouflages optimized for a single spectral band or single type of background environment, rendering them vulnerable in other bands or backgrounds. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous visual and thermal camouflage that can adapt to two different environments based on a thermally emissive electrochromic layer.

In the templated synthesis of colloidal core-shell nanoparticles, the monomer attachment growth mechanism has been widely accepted to describe the growth process of shells. In this work, by using advanced transmission electron microscope techniques, we directly observe two alternative particle attachment growth pathways that dominate the growth of Au@Ag core-shell nanocuboids. One pathway involves the reduction of AgCl nanoparticles attached to Au nanorods and the subsequent epitaxial growth of the Ag shell.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), which are favorable to form intimate interfacial contacts with electrodes, are promising electrolyte of choice for long-cycling lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, typical SPEs with easily oxidized oxygen-bearing polar groups exhibit narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW), making it impractical to increase specific capacity and energy density of SPE based LMBs with charging cut-off voltage of 4.5 V or higher.

In this study, we used the lock-in thermography technique (LIT) to successfully visualize the single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) networks during the tensile deformation of CNT/fluoro-rubber (FKM) composites. The LIT images revealed that the CNT network modes in CNT/FKM during strain-loading and unloading can be classified into four sites: (i) disconnection, (ii) recovery after disconnection, (iii) undestroyable, and (iv) no network. Quantitative analysis of the heat intensity of the LIT also indicated that the change in resistance during strain-loading and unloading plays a role in the balance of disconnection and reconstruction of the conductive network.

The generation of high-purity localized trions, dynamic exciton-trion interconversion, and their spatial modulation in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are building blocks for the realization of trion-based optoelectronic devices. Here, we present a method for the all-optical control of the exciton-to-trion conversion process and its spatial distributions in a MoS monolayer. We induce a nanoscale strain gradient in a 2D crystal transferred on a lateral metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide and exploit propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) to localize hot electrons.

While the functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has attracted extensive interest for a wide range of applications, a facial and versatile strategy remains in demand. Here, we report a microwave-assisted, solvent-free approach to directly functionalize CNTs both in raw form and in arbitrary macroscopic assemblies. Rapid microwave irradiation was applied to generate active sites on the CNTs while not inducing excessive damage to the graphitic network, and a gas-phase deposition afforded controllable grafting for thorough or regioselective functionalization.

Na MnV(PO ) /C (NMVP) has been considered an attractive cathode for sodium-ion batteries with higher working voltage and lower cost than Na V (PO ) /C. However, the poor intrinsic electronic conductivity and Jahn-Teller distortion caused by Mn inhibit its practical application. In this work, the remarkable effects of Zr-substitution on prompting electronic and Na-ion conductivity and also structural stabilization are reported.

High-entropy transition-metal oxides are potentially interesting cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, among which high-entropy layered oxides are considered highly promising because there exist two-dimensional ion transport channels that may, in principle, enable fast ion transport. However, high-entropy layered oxides reported to date exhibit fast capacity fading in initial cycles and thus are hardly of any practical value. Here, we investigate the structural and property changes of a five-element layered oxide, LiNiCoMnFeAlO, using electrochemical and physical characterization techniques.

Photo(electro)catalysis methods have drawn significant attention for efficient, energy-saving, and environmental-friendly organic contaminant degradation in wastewater. However, conventional oxide-based powder photocatalysts are limited to UV-light absorption and are unfavorable in the subsequent postseparation process. In this paper, a large-area crystalline-semiconductor nitride membrane with a distinct nanoporous surface is fabricated, which can be scaled up to a full wafer and easily retrieved after photodegradation.

O3-Type layered oxides are widely studied as cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacities. However, their rate capability and durability are limited by tortuous Na diffusion channels and complicated phase evolution during Na extraction/insertion. Here we report our findings in unravelling the mechanism for dramatically enhancing the stability and rate capability of O3-NaNiMnSbO (NaNMS) by substitutional Sb doping, which can alter the coordination environment and chemical bonds of the transition metal (TM) ions in the structure, resulting in a more stable structure with wider Na transport channels.

To date, several smart stents have been proposed to continuously detect biological cues, which is essential for tracking patients' critical vital signs and therapy. However, the proposed smart stent fabrication techniques rely on conventional laser micro-cutting or 3D printing technologies. The sensors are then integrated into the stent structure using an adhesive, conductive epoxy, or laser micro-welding process.

In the process of bone metastasis, tumor cells spread to the bones to activate osteoclasts, which cause pathological bone resorption and destruction. Bisphosphonates (BPs) inhibit osteoclast activation to resorb bone, reducing bone pain and fracture. We previously developed a nanocomposite for potential localized treatment of bone metastasis by loading a BP compound, ibandronate, onto oxidized carbon nanohorns (OxCNHs), a next-generation drug carrier, using calcium phosphates (CaPs) as mediators to generate OxCNH-CaP-BP nanocomposites.

The use of microspheres for culturing adherent cells has been proven as an important method, allowing for obtaining adequate number of cells in limited space and volume of medium for the intended cell-based medical applications. However, the use of proteolytic enzymes for cell harvesting from the microsphere resulted in cell damage and loss of functionality. Therefore, in this study, we developed a novel redox/thermo-responsive dissolvable gelatin-based microsphere for successful cell proliferation and harvesting adequate high-quality cells using non-enzymatic cell detachment methods.
