Background: Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is an effective treatment for end-stage osteoarthritis, but postoperative pain has been poorly managed. The purpose of this study was to (1) assess how much narcotic medication was prescribed after TJA; (2) assess if patients were satisfied with their pain management; (3) compare these same data between total hip arthroplasty (THA)/total knee arthroplasty (TKA); (4) compare these same data between preoperative opioid users/opioid-naïve patients.

Methods: An IRB-approved prospective study was conducted at a US academic joint replacement practice.

Introduction: Infective endocarditis (IE) due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is characterized by frequent treatment failure to first-line agents and high mortality, necessitating use of alternative management strategies. Ceftaroline fosamil (CPT) is a cephalosporin antibiotic with activity against MRSA but without regulatory approval for the indication of IE. This study describes clinical experience with CPT-based regimens utilized in MRSA-IE.

Despite most monoclonal antibodies against Aβ in Alzheimer's failed to demonstrate efficacy, the newest antibodies showed statistically significant clinical effects. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the efficacy, target engagement, and safety of anti-Aβ antibodies in sporadic AD including phase III RCTs published up to November 28, 2023. Antibodies as a drug class, attenuated worsening on the clinical scales CDR-SB and ADAS-Cog by very small effect sizes and reduced amyloid on PET by a very large effect size.

Introduction: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and lumbar neuroforaminal stenosis (LNS) are common diagnoses that plague patients with low back pain. Electrodiagnostic testing (EDX) can be used as an adjunct to investigate lower extremity radicular nerve pain and/or neurogenic claudication. However, there are only limited studies discussing the association of these diagnostic tools with radiculopathy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effects of injecting micronized amnion/chorion bilayer into the bladder of patients with refractory interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) after traditional treatments failed.
  • All fifteen patients experienced significant improvement in their symptoms one month after the injections, and this relief continued for up to six months with no adverse events reported.
  • These results suggest that the amnion/chorion bilayer treatment is effective and safe for managing IC/BPS, providing hope for better long-term outcomes in affected patients.

In pediatric patients, frostbite is a well-documented cause of epiphyseal cartilage destruction and subsequent growth deformity of the affected phalanges. Cases of full acroosteolysis, also referred to as phalangeal osteolysis, of distal phalanges as soon as three months after cold exposure have yet to be reported. We describe a complicated case of frostbite-associated phalangeal osteolysis in the dominant hand of a nine-year-old patient, in the context of post-traumatic insensate hand after sustaining prior electrical burn injuries.

Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) impact morbidity and mortality in burn patients, exacerbated by extensive fluid resuscitation required for more than 20% of total body surface area burns. We report a case of a 28-year-old male with severe burns and a TBSA of 49% who presented after a fire incident. The trauma team managed the patient's fluid resuscitation, followed by early burn debridement.

This covers discovery and mechanistic aspects as well as initial applications of novel ionization processes for use in mass spectrometry that guided us in a series of subsequent discoveries, instrument developments, and commercialization. matrix-assisted ionization on an intermediate pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization source the use of a laser, high voltages, or any other added energy was simply unbelievable, at first. Individually and as a whole, the various discoveries and inventions started to paint, , an exciting new picture and outlook in mass spectrometry from which key developments grew that were at the time unimaginable, and continue to surprise us in its simplistic preeminence.

Cognitive control processes enable the suppression of automatic behaviors and the initiation of appropriate responses. The Stroop color naming task serves as a benchmark paradigm for understanding the neurobiological model of verbal cognitive control. Previous research indicates a predominant engagement of the prefrontal and premotor cortex during the Stroop task compared to reading.

Background: Patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with severe hypertension defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥180 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or diastolic (DBP) ≥120 (mm Hg) without evidence of acute end-organ damage are often deemed high risk and treated acutely in the ED. However, there is a dearth of evidence from large studies with long-term follow-up for the assessment of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). We conducted the largest study to date of patients presenting with severe hypertension to identify predictors of MACE and examine whether blood pressure at discharge is associated with heightened risk.
