Imidazole-based epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors were computationally designed and synthesized. All the compounds were assessed for their anti-proliferative activity against five cancer cell lines, , MDA-MB-231 (breast), T47D (breast) and MCF-7 (breast), A549 (lung) and HT-29 (colorectal). Compounds and emerged as better anticancer molecules with no toxicity towards normal cells.

Metabolic Adaptations in Cancer Stem Cells.

Front Oncol

June 2020

Department of Experimental Therapeutics, MD Anderson Cancer Centre, The University of Texas, Houston, TX, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • * These cells exist in various tumor types such as melanoma and colon cancer, each showing distinct energy production methods, like aerobic glycolysis or oxidative phosphorylation, and often rely on fatty acids and ketone bodies for energy.
  • * Understanding the unique metabolic pathways of CSCs could help identify new molecular targets for therapies aimed at eliminating these cells and preventing cancer recurrence.

Background: A key setback of root canal treatment (RCT) is that most patients lack adequate knowledge about it. Understanding and identifying the factors that hinder or discourage patients from undergoing RCT is necessary to adequately address the issue. The review of literature shows that there is a paucity of data about the awareness and acceptance of RCT among patients in Indian population.

Introduction: Human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) shows different biological behavior as compared to tobacco-induced OSCC. Mere presence of HPV in OSCC is of no clinical significance; however, the integration of HPV-DNA through E6/E7 gene into the host genome is important as it affects the development and progression of OSCC.

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the presence of E6/E7 proteins of high-risk (HR) HPV (HPV16 and HPV18) in saliva as well as lesional tissue of OSCC patients and to determine the use of saliva as an alternative to tissue for E6 and E7 proteins in OSCC.

Introduction: Oral cancer has been a scourge on the human population that drastically affects the quality of life-causing chronic anxiety and depression leading to disturbance in hypothalamus pituitary axis reflected by cortisol hormone dysregulation. Stress hormones affect tumor progression at different levels such as initiation, tumor growth and metastasis. Cortisol dysregulation has been reported in other malignancies; however, a thorough review of English literature revealed only anecdotal studies investigating it in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of Picrosirius red and MMP-13 on collagen degradation in oral lesions, specifically comparing staining results from oral leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
  • A total of 70 tissue slides were analyzed, with findings showing that MMP-13 expression was higher in OSMF than in leukoplakia, while OSCC cases exhibited significant expression as well.
  • The results suggest that targeting MMP-13 could potentially slow down tumor progression by inhibiting collagen breakdown, and Picrosirius red staining could serve as a reliable method for assessing tissue structure in these conditions.

Introduction: Periodontitis is a common problem affecting a significant population of the world. For the assessment of oxidative stress of an individual, total oxidation status (TOS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) are the significant biomarkers. Hence, we planned the present study to assess malondialde-hyde (MDA), TOS, TAOC levels, and oxidative stress index (OSI) in generalized aggressive periodontitis (GP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) patients.

June 2018

Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, BRS Dental College and General Hospital, Panchkula, Haryana, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral health care for children with special needs, particularly those with hearing impairment, often goes unmet, highlighting the need for preventive strategies.
  • This study evaluated how visual teaching methods and probiotic mouth rinses can affect oral health in 20 hearing-impaired children compared to 20 healthy peers using specific dental health indicators.
  • Results showed that while hygiene training alone didn't lead to improvements, probiotic mouth rinses significantly enhanced periodontal health by reducing gum inflammation and plaque levels, suggesting a potential preventive approach for special needs populations.
