Journey to Transplant: Developing a social support network counselling intervention to improve kidney transplantation.

Context: Kidney transplant is superior to dialysis for the treatment of end-stage kidney disease, but accessing transplant requires high patient engagement to overcome barriers. We sought to develop an educational counselling intervention for patients along with their social support networks to help patients access the waiting list.

Methods: Utilizing an Intervention Mapping approach, we established a conceptual framework to develop a behavioural intervention that can be reproduced across kidney transplant centres.

Harnessing the Power of Kiwifruit for Radiosensitization of Melanoma.

Background: Melanoma is the deadliest variant of skin cancer and its incidence continues to increase. There are limited treatment options for advanced and metastatic cases of melanoma, despite advances in immunotherapy and chemotherapy. Melanoma is notorious as a radioresistant tumor.

Robotic Resection of Type I Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma with Intrapancreatic Bile Duct Dissection.

Background: Type I hilar cholangiocarcinoma is a malignancy of the extrahepatic bile duct for which margin-negative resection with sufficient lymphadenectomy may provide curative treatment. The aim of this video is to highlight the advantages of optical magnification, articulating instruments, and indocyanine green fluorescent cholangiography to demonstrate extrahepatic bile duct resection from the biliary confluence to the intrapancreatic bile duct with comprehensive hilar lymphadenectomy for pathologic staging.

Methods: A 58-year-old male presented with obstructive jaundice and was found to have a biliary stricture arising from the cystic duct and bile duct junction.

Legionella Pneumonia on Point-of-care Ultrasound in the Emergency Department: A Case Report.

Introduction: Legionella is an uncommon, atypical organism that can cause community-acquired pneumonia. Commonly associated with high fevers, gastrointestinal symptoms, and hyponatremia, it can be easily overlooked, especially during the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Legionella has specific antibiotic treatment that will improve outcome; thus, its recognition is important.

Ablation of Sam68 in adult mice increases thermogenesis and energy expenditure.

Genetic deletion of Src associated in mitosis of 68kDa (Sam68), a pleiotropic adaptor protein prevents high-fat diet-induced weight gain and insulin resistance. To clarify the role of Sam68 in energy metabolism in the adult stage, we generated an inducible Sam68 knockout mice. Knockout of Sam68 was induced at the age of 7-10 weeks, and then we examined the metabolic profiles of the mice.

A rare case of ciliated muconodular papillary tumor accompanied with adenocarcinoma in situ.

Background: Ciliated muconodular papillary tumor (CMPT) is an incredibly rare pulmonary tumor. Currently, little is known about CMPT, and it has not yet been classified by the World Health Organization. The clinical manifestation of CMPT is nonspecific and the diagnosis is only based on pathology.

Cranberry Extract Is a Potent Radiosensitizer for Glioblastoma.

Background/aim: Glioblastoma, also known as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), is the most aggressive type of primary brain tumor and a cornerstone in its treatment is radiotherapy (RT). However, RT for GBM is largely ineffective at clinically safe doses, thus, the study of radiosensitizers is of great significance.

Materials And Methods: With accumulating evidence for the anticancer effect of compounds from cranberry, this study was designed to investigate if cranberry extract (CE) sensitizes GBM to RT in the widely used human glioblastoma cell line U87.

Engagement of the Median Glossoepiglottic Fold and Laryngeal View During Emergency Department Intubation.

Study Objective: When using a standard geometry laryngoscope, experts recommend engaging the hyoepiglottic ligament-a ligament deep to the vallecula not visible to the intubator. The median glossoepiglottic fold (hereafter termed midline vallecular fold) is a superficial mucosal structure, visible to the intubator, that lies in the midline of the vallecula. We aimed to determine whether engaging the midline vallecular fold with a standard geometry blade tip during orotracheal intubation improved laryngeal visualization.

The role of interleukins and the widely studied TNF-α in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a relatively common cancer with malignant tendencies. Although there is no current cure for the disease, research has been successful in figuring out the mechanisms of how the disease progresses, however, there is still a lot of unknowns, and more research must be done to find the ultimate cause of the disease. Interleukins and various cytokines play unique roles in the development of cancer.

The role of various interleukins in acute myeloid leukemia.

Interleukins are signaling molecules involved in the immune system, and they play a variety of roles in different diseases and cancers. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common type of leukemia in adults, and survival rate after diagnosis is very low. Investigating the role interleukins play in AML can help understand the progression of the disease.

Potential use of kiwifruit extract for treatment of melanoma.

Skin cancers are the most common cancers in the world and among the different types of skin cancers, melanoma is the deadliest and incidence is rising. Previous studies have shown promising in vitro and human evidence of kiwifruit exhibiting anti-cancer effects. This study was designed to investigate if kiwifruit extract (KE) has any effect on CRL-11147 melanoma cancer cells and to investigate the possible mechanisms behind the results.

Retrospective review of cesarean hysterectomy outcomes utilizing uterine intravascular interventions in a large, community-based healthcare setting.

Objective: To explore outcomes of women with planned cesarean hysterectomies, with or without use of internal iliac intravascular occlusive balloon catheter or uterine artery embolization (UAE).

Study Design: We retrospectively reviewed adult women who underwent a planned cesarean hysterectomy, 2004-2019. All planned cases were included, regardless of indication.

Oncologic and surgical outcomes for gastric cancer patients undergoing gastrectomy differ by race in the United States.

Introduction: Gastric adenocarcinoma lymph node retrieval during gastrectomy and survival differ significantly between Asian and Western studies. It is unclear whether such disparities are the result of surgical technique, patient population, or other factors. In this observational study, we aimed to determine whether lymph node retrieval and outcomes differ between White, Black, and Asian American patients undergoing gastrectomy for adenocarcinoma.

Racial disparities in breast cancer hereditary risk assessment referrals.

For poorly understood reasons, Black non-Hispanic (BNH) women meeting National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) criteria for genetic testing for breast cancer risk are less likely than White non-Hispanic (WNH) women to undergo testing (Armstrong, Micco, Carney, Stopfer, & Putt, JAMA, 293, 1729 and 2005). We compared physician referral rates and uptake for genetic testing of BNH and WNH women meeting select NCCN criteria (breast cancer under age 50, two primary breast cancers, triple-negative disease under age 60) in the Cancer Center at George Washington University (GWCC) between 2015 and 2018. Of the 723 BNH and WNH patients treated for breast cancer at GWCC, 28% met study criteria for genetic counseling referral (n = 252; BNH n = 115, WNH n = 137).

Female Heart Health: Is GPER the Missing Link?

The G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (GPER) is a novel membrane-bound receptor that mediates non-genomic actions of the primary female sex hormone 17β-estradiol. Studies over the past two decades have elucidated the beneficial actions of this receptor in a number of cardiometabolic diseases. This review will focus specifically on the cardiac actions of GPER, since this receptor is expressed in cardiomyocytes as well as other cells within the heart and most likely contributes to estrogen-induced cardioprotection.

Zika virus knowledge, contraception use, and lessons learned from a Dominican Republic pilot study.

Objective: To assess knowledge of the Zika virus (ZIKV), use of contraceptives, and sources of health information in rural communities in the Dominican Republic.

Methods: Over 4 days in March 2017, a research team traveled to four rural communities in the Dominican Republic to provide healthcare services. Overall, 90 men and women consented to a voluntary verbal 12-question survey.

Potentially inappropriate medication prescribing in the elderly: Is the Beers Criteria relevant in the Emergency Department today?

Study Objective: To investigate the frequency of Beers Criteria (BC) medication and opioid use in patients age 65 years and older arriving in the Emergency Department.

Methods: We performed a retrospective observational study of a convenience sample of 400 patients, age 65 years and older, arriving to and discharged solely from the Emergency Department. We examined 400 sequential patient charts with visit dates April-July 2017, for the presence of a Beers Criteria medication or opioid prescription.

The Role of Interleukin-9 in Cancer.

Interluekin-9 (IL-9) is produced predominantly by helper T cells such as Th2 and Th9 cells. It normally functions through the activation of a JAK/STAT pathway and plays a critical role in immunity and the pathogenesis of cancer. In cancer, it yields different responses depending on the cancer cell line involved.

Background: Ewing sarcoma, a rare cause of cord compression, is predominantly of osseous origin but can also originate in soft tissues. Soft-tissue manifestations account for <15% of all Ewing sarcoma tumors, and even fewer cases of Ewing sarcoma originating in the epidural space have been documented.
