Age at menarche: risk factor for gestational diabetes.

J Obstet Gynaecol

May 2022

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Derince Education and Research Hospital, T.C. Ministry of Health Kocaeli Health Sciences University, Kocaeli, Türkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the connection between the age of menarche (first menstrual period) and the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) among pregnant women in Turkey.
  • It found that women with menarche before age 12 have a 2.3 times higher risk of GDM, and those with a pre-pregnancy BMI over 25 kg/m² face about twice the risk.
  • The findings suggest that age at menarche, cycle duration, and BMI are significant risk factors for GDM, highlighting the need for better evaluation of menstrual history by healthcare professionals to inform future pregnancy care.

Ruptured Tentorium Originating Masson Tumor.

Asian J Neurosurg

February 2021

Department of Neurosurgery, Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University, Ankara, Turkey.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia (IPEH) also known as Masson's tumor, is a benign, slow growing, vascular lesion which is seen very rarely and only a few cases have been reported intracranially in the literature. It has been reported at many sites, but the posterior fossa involvement is very rare. The preoperative diagnosis is very difficult, as there is no enough cases to achieve a clear understanding about the details of its radiological findings.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at eye health in kids with thalassemia major (a blood condition) and compared them to healthy kids.
  • They checked things like eye thickness and shapes to see if there were any big differences.
  • They found that kids with thalassemia had different eye measurements, like thinner corneas and a shallower front part of the eye, compared to the healthy kids.

Article Synopsis
  • Older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those on maintenance haemodialysis (HD) show a higher likelihood of severe COVID-19 outcomes compared to non-uraemic patients.
  • The study analyzed data from 879 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, revealing that older individuals in the CKD and HD groups experienced significantly greater rates of severe illness and ICU admissions than the control group.
  • In-hospital mortality rates were also notably elevated in older patients with CKD and HD, indicating a critical need for targeted healthcare strategies for these vulnerable populations.

Scoring systems have been developed to predict the expected mortality and morbidity in surgical procedures. In this study, our aim was to compare the ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists), APACHE (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) II, POSSUM (Physiological and Operative Severity Score for the enUmeration of Mortality and morbidity) scoring systems as predictors of mortality in patients who underwent gastrointestinal oncologic surgery, followed, and were admitted to the intensive care unit during the postoperative period. We examined the files of 82 patients who underwent oncologic gastrointestinal surgery and followed up in the intensive care units (ICUs).

Cranial MRI Abnormalities and Long-term Follow-up of the Lesions in 770 Girls With Central Precocious Puberty.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab

June 2021

Marmara University, School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Istanbul, Turkey.

Context: Central precocious puberty (CPP) may arise from central nervous system (CNS) lesions in a few affected girls. Recently, the incidence of girls with CPP has increased mostly in 6-8 year olds, in whom the necessity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is debated.

Objective: To investigate the frequency, long-term outcome and potential predictors of CNS lesions in a large cohort of girls with CPP.

It has been stated that the effectiveness of pectopexy method for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is similar to sacrocolpopexy. We aimed to search the effects of pectopexy method to the quality of life, sexual function and urinary incontinence. Thirty-one patients who were operated for POP with the technique of laparoscopic pectouteropexy/pectocolpopexy between January 2016 and November 2017 were included the study.

Permanent pacing for recurrent vasovagal syncope: New answers or just more questions?

J Electrocardiol

July 2021

Department of Cardiac Science, Libin Cardiovascular Institute, University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada.

Vasovagal syncope (VVS) is a clinical condition related to bradycardia (cardioinhibitory response) and/or hypotension (vasodepressor response), likely mediated by parasympathetic overactivity and sympathetic withdrawal. Although clinical presentation is usually related to a self-limited event, frequent episodes or events without prodrome might be debilitating. There are limited medical therapies proven effective in randomized clinical trials.

Background: Adequate and effective therapy for resistant vasovagal syncope patients is lacking and the benefit of cardioneuroablation (CNA) in this cohort is still debated. The aim of this study is to assess the long-term effect of CNA versus conservative therapy (CT) in a retrospectively followed cohort.

Methods: A total of 2874 patients underwent head-up tilt test (HUT) and 554 (19.

Purpose: We aimed to define the role of extended pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), posterior wall isolation, and mitral isthmus lines to eliminate electrograms exhibiting fractionation pattern during stepwise ablation on acute atrial fibrillation (AF) termination rate in patients with long-standing persistent AF (LSPAF).

Methods: Twelve patients with LSPAF underwent ablation during AF. Using the fractionation mapping tool of the Ensite™ (Abbott Medical, Chicago, USA) system, sites exhibiting discrete atrial complexes and consistent activation sequence were mapped.

Objectives: Laparoscopic surgery has numerous advantages over open surgery in view of postoperative pain. In this context, to elevate its benefits and patient satisfaction, different pain management interventions have been used so far. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of bupivacaine injection to trocar sites following laparoscopic hysterectomy for the management of postoperative pain.

Objectives: Since nonvalvular atrial fibrillation is persistent in nature, patients with chronic nonvalvular atrial fibrillation are at life-time risk for development of thromboembolic events. Several novel oral anticoagulants have entered the market and there has been a growing body of evidence regarding their efficacy in prevention of ischemic stroke and arterial thromboembolism. The present study sought to compare the baseline characteristics between patients presenting with upper and lower extremity arterial thromboembolism developed secondary to nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.

Objective: Transorbital approaches for neurosurgery have recently attracted attention and several anatomical studies have aimed to improve these techniques, but significant deficiencies in clinical practice remain, especially for aneurysm surgery. The authors present an alternative microsurgical route and the results of an analysis of patients with intracranial aneurysms who underwent a lateral transorbital approach (LTOA) using lateral orbito-zygoma-sphenotomy (LOZYGS).

Methods: The clinical and surgical results of a series of 54 consecutive patients with 1 or more aneurysms who underwent surgery via LTOA are reported.

We aimed to compare the changes of the angle with inferior turbinate and the maxillary medial wall of the uncinate process in patients with septal spur by normal population. In the study, 138 patients with septal spur and unilateral septum deviation and 83 patients without septum deviation were evaluated retrospectively.
