The development of green and environmentally friendly synthesis methods of electrocatalysts is a crucial aspect in decarbonizing energy generation. In this study, eco-friendly mechanochemical synthesis of perovskite metal oxide-carbon black composites is proposed using different conditions and additives such as KOH. Furthermore, the optimization of ball milling conditions, including time and rotational speed, is studied.

Zn-air batteries (ZABs) are promising electrochemical devices to store energy. Metal oxide perovskites mixed with carbon materials are highlighted as interesting materials for this application because of their appropriate bifunctional performance in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The interaction between both components of the electrocatalyst is important in the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity, and the mixing method plays an important role in this interaction.

Transition metal oxide-based materials are an interesting alternative to substitute noble-metal based catalyst in energy conversion devices designed for oxygen reduction (ORR), oxygen evolution (OER) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Perovskite (ABO) and spinel (ABO) oxides stand out against other structures due to the possibility of tailoring their chemical composition and, consequently, their properties. Particularly, the electrocatalytic performance of these materials depends on features such as chemical composition, crystal structure, nanostructure, cation substitution level, e orbital filling or oxygen vacancies.

The chemical composition of a LaMnO perovskite was modified sequentially by an improved sol-gel method to include cobalt centers in some B sites formerly occupied by Mn. In this way, a representative set of materials of general formula LaMnCoO was obtained whose composition extends from LaMnO to LaCoO. These perovskites, as promising materials for oxygen reduction or oxygen evolution reactions, were characterized by several imaging (SEM), spectroscopic (XPS, EDX) and diffraction (XRD) techniques to elucidate their structure and to demonstrate the existence of composition differences between the catalytic surface and the bulk material.

We have discovered a very simple method to address the challenge associated with the low volumetric energy density of free-standing carbon nanofiber electrodes for supercapacitors by electrospinning Kraft lignin in the presence of an oxidizing salt (NaNO) and subsequent carbonization in a reducing atmosphere. The presence of the oxidative salt decreases the diameter of the resulting carbon nanofibers doubling their packing density from 0.51 to 1.

The direct electron transfer between indium-tin oxide electrodes (ITO) and cytochrome c encapsulated in different sol-gel silica networks was studied. Cyt c@silica modified electrodes were synthesized by a two-step encapsulation method mixing a phosphate buffer solution with dissolved cytochrome c and a silica sol prepared by the alcohol-free sol-gel route. These modified electrodes were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and in situ UV-vis spectroelectrochemistry.

Ascorbic acid molecules in either acid or conjugate base forms have been oxidized on self-doping carboxylated polyaniline thin films. The kinetic model proposed by Bartlett et al. has been successfully applied to the catalytic reactions.
