Background: Ageing is associated with changes in body composition including an overall reduction in muscle mass and a proportionate increase in fat mass. Sarcopenia is characterised by losses in both muscle mass and strength. Body composition and muscle strength are at least in part genetically determined, consequently polymorphisms in pathways important in muscle biology (e.

Background: Angiotensin II (AII), has been suggested to promote muscle loss. Reducing AII synthesis, by inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity has been proposed as a method to inhibit muscle loss. The LACE clinical trial was designed to determine whether ACE inhibition would reduce further muscle loss in individuals with sarcopenia but suffered from low recruitment and returned a negative result.

The analysis of circulating cell free DNA is an important tool for the analysis of tumor resistance, tumor heterogeneity, detection of minimal residual disease and detection of allograft rejection in kidney or heart transplant patients. The proper use of this technique is important, and starts with considering pre-analytic aspects. The current paper addresses some important technical considerations to ensure the proper and harmonized use of cfDNA techniques.

Background: Quantification of ventricular performance requires a comprehensive metric which is manageable for patient care and clinical trials. Ejection fraction (EF) has been embraced as an attractive candidate. However, being a dimensionless ratio, EF has serious limitations.

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is emerging as valuable biomarker in cardiovascular disease and diabetic kidney disease. Also, GDF15 represents an early response gene induced after tissue injury and studies performed in GDF15 knockout (KO) mice suggest that GDF15 plays a protective role after injury. In the current study, we investigated the role of GDF15 in the development of diabetic kidney damage in type 1 and type 2 models of diabetes.

A variety of developmental changes is of influence on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of midazolam in neonatal and pediatric intensive care patients. However, dosing regimens in children are based upon rather empirical extrapolations from the dosing regimens in adults. Based on current available studies it appears that with the rising of age, the pharmacokinetics of intravenously administered midazolam alter, resulting in a shorter half-life due to a higher hepatic clearance in older children as compared to newborn.

In this article arguments are given to stop the current practise of infusing albumin in patients in shock and low levels of serum albumin. Correcting the albumin levels is not correlated with better survival or change in morbidity. Fluid therapy including the use of synthetic plasma expanders is the accepted therapy for patients in sceptic shock.

The term designating a substance being an active ingredient of a drug may be a generic name, a nonproprietary name, a registered trade name, a fantasy name or other. This causes difficulties in the transmission of request and report on such substances to and from the clinical laboratories, and in the collating of this information from different sources. The document comprises a list of properties of drugs of abuse in biological fluids as defined by the International Olympic Committee Medical Code for use in electronic transmission systems.
