The infants are explicitly vulnerable to develop anaesthesia-related complications, with micropreemies being at the end of the spectrum because of their unique morphological and physiological features. Airway changes in pediatric patients are most exaggerated in these tiny infants and their immature lungs provide a little reserve, and therefore, securing airways can be challenging in this population. Moreover, many devices available for managing difficult airways in adults are not available for use in this miniature version.

Background And Aim: Caudal block (CB) is the standard of care in pediatric surgeries. Ultrasound (USG) transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block has also been used as an effective regional anesthesia technique. We compared the duration of postoperative and intraoperative analgesia between TAP block, CB, and local wound infiltration (LI) in children undergoing unilateral infraumbilical abdominal surgery.

Objectives: Transition from cardiac hypertrophy to failure involves adverse metabolic reprogramming involving mitochondrial dysfunction. We have earlier shown that vitamin D deficiency induces heart failure, at least in part, through insulin resistance. However, whether activation of vitamin D receptor (VDR) can attenuate heart failure and underlying metabolic phenotype requires investigation.

Pulmonary infections are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients and almost one-third of intensive care unit patients with pulmonary infections belong to the immunocompromised category. Multiple organisms may simultaneously infect an immunocompromised patient and the overwhelming burden of mixed infections further predisposes critically ill patients to acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. Notwithstanding that lung ultrasound is coming into vogue, the primary imaging investigation is a chest radiograph, followed by thoracic CT scan.

Introduction: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) uptake has been slow in some countries, including Botswana. To inform demand creation efforts, we examined sociodemographic characteristics and referral procedures associated with VMMC uptake in the Botswana Combination Prevention Project (BCPP) and examined the effectiveness of referral of men to MC services from HIV testing venues.
Design: BCPP was a community-randomized trial evaluating the impact of a combination HIV prevention package which included VMMC on community HIV incidence.

Unlabelled: Although no scoring system is as yet fully validated for predicting maternal outcomes in critically ill obstetric patients, prognostication may be done objectively using severity predicting models. General critical care scoring systems which have been studied in obstetric patients are outcome prediction models (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation [APACHE] I-IV, Simplified Acute Physiology Score [SAPS] I-III, Mortality Probability Model [MPM] I-IV) and organ dysfunction scores (Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score [MODS], Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score [LODS], Sequential Organ Failure Assessment [SOFA]). General critical care scoring systems may overpredict mortality rates in obstetric patients secondary to an altered physiology of organ systems during pregnancy.

Introduction: As part of an effort to meet ambitious male circumcision targets in Eswatini, programme implementers have increasingly focused on young males, raising questions about informed consent. Males aged 10-19 years account for more than two-thirds of those circumcised since 2008 when internationally funded circumcision campaigns began in Eswatini. The ethical guidelines of these programmes conform to international standards, requiring that informed consent or assent be obtained prior to surgery.

Although emtricitabine-tenofovir was approved for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in 2012, use by persons at risk of acquiring HIV has been limited. Because many primary care providers lacked familiarity and comfort prescribing PrEP, at our institution PrEP prescribing was concentrated among the infectious disease specialists, effectively limiting access. This project sought to increase the number of patients receiving new prescriptions for PrEP.

Introduction: in 2016, the partner-funded Smart-LyncAges participatory learning project explored the feasibility of a youth-friendly package including incentivized peer educators (PEs) to enhance adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) and voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) linkages. After 12 months of implementation, funding reduction resulted in reduced direct project monitoring and discontinuation of monetary incentives for PEs. We assessed if reduced funding after one year of implementation affected the performance and retention of PEs and uptake of VMMC and HIV testing in ASRH services by adolescents in Bulawayo City (urban) and Mount (Mt) Darwin District (rural) in Zimbabwe.
