Southern Surgical Association: Leadership Pre and Post Flexner's Report.

The Joseph M Donald Endowment for the Archival Collection of the Southern Surgical Association is named for the 73rd President Elect of the Southern Surgical Association (Figure 1), who died in 1961 at age 57 before he had the opportunity to deliver his Presidential Address. Dr Donald's career as a surgeon in Birmingham began in 1931 after the completion of his residency at the Mayo Clinic. He was one of four generations of Donalds to serve Alabama as physicians.

Changes in neurologic status after traumatic brain injury in the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Hypertonic Saline trial.

Objectives: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important public health problem resulting in significant death and disability. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel often provide initial treatment for TBI, but only limited data describe the long-term course and outcomes of this care. We sought to characterize changes in neurologic status among adults with TBI patients enrolled in the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Hypertonic Saline (ROC-HS) trial.

Factors Associated With Health-Related Quality of Life 2 Years After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation: Insights From INTERMACS.

Background Factors related to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) 2 years after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation are unknown. We sought to determine whether preimplant intended goal of LVAD therapy (heart transplant candidate [short-term group], uncertain heart transplant candidate [uncertain group], and heart transplant ineligible [long-term group]) and other variables were related to HRQOL 2 years after LVAD implantation. Methods and Results Our LVAD sample (n=1620) was from INTERMACS (Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support).

Creation and Validation of a Novel Sex-Specific Mortality Risk Score in LVAD Recipients.

Background Prior studies have shown that women have worse 3-month survival after receiving a left ventricular assist device compared with men. Currently used prognostic scores, including the Heartmate II Risk Score, do not account for the increased residual risk in women. We used the IMACS (International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support) registry to create and validate a sex-specific risk score for early mortality in left ventricular assist device recipients.

Whole blood transfusion versus component therapy in trauma resuscitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Patients with hemorrhagic shock from trauma often require balanced blood product transfusion with red blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Resuscitation with whole blood resuscitation is becoming a common practice. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing whole blood transfusion with balanced component therapy in patients suffering from traumatic hemorrhagic shock.

Perforated Meckel Diverticulum: A Rare Cause of Acute Abdomen in Children.

Meckel diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and the most common cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in children. Although it usually follows the rule of 2's, exceptions to this rule are reported in the literature. Often asymptomatic, MD is commonly an incidental finding during surgical interventions.
