Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a heterogeneous hematologic malignancy, has generally a poor prognosis despite the recent advancements in diagnostics and treatment. Genetic instability, particularly mutations in the FMS-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) gene, is associated with severe outcomes. Approximately 30 % of AML patients harbor FLT3 mutations, which have been linked to higher relapse and reduced survival rates.

Identifying critical elements in using question prompt lists at the pharmacy counter to induce patient activation-using principles of conversation analysis.

Res Social Adm Pharm

February 2025

Medicine use & Pharmaceutical policy, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Box 453, 40530, Gothenburg, Sweden. Electronic address:

Background: The incorporation of Question Prompt Lists (QPLs) into pharmacy interactions has been tested as an innovative strategy aimed at enhancing patient engagement and addressing personal information needs. However, there is a gap in understanding regarding how QPLs induce or reduce patient activation and contribute to improved medical treatment. The specific aim of the study was therefore to qualitatively describe how pharmacy encounters in which QPL are introduced unfold, in order to identify and discuss relevant interactional mechanisms that induce or reduce patient activation.

Our study aimed to assess the prevalence of fall risk-increasing drugs (FRIDs) in a sample of community-residing older patients in Croatia and its association with negative health outcomes. An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted on older patients (65+) visiting community pharmacies in three regionally different study sites in Croatia. Data were collected using a questionnaire developed for that purpose and included components of comprehensive geriatric assessment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Given that cholinergic neurons are predominantly affected in AD, current treatments primarily aim to enhance cholinergic neurotransmission. However, imbalances in other neurotransmitters, such as γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), also contribute to AD symptomatology.

Defining and Categorizing Nonpharmacologic Interventions in the Older Population: A Systematic Review.

J Am Med Dir Assoc

January 2025

Aging & Later Life, Amsterdam Public Health, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Department of Medicine for Older People, Amsterdam UMC, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Objectives: Nonpharmacologic interventions (NPIs) constitute an important part of treatment for older adults, cover a broad and diverse range of interventions, and have advantages over pharmacologic interventions (eg, limited adverse side effects). However, an unambiguous definition of NPIs is still lacking. Defining NPIs may facilitate research on this topic and enhance comparability of results between studies, and might help to face the challenges of recognition, acceptation, funding, and implementation.

  • The study examined the effect of PD-L1 expression levels on overall survival (OS) in stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with pembrolizumab.
  • A total of 617 patients from multiple oncology centers were analyzed, categorized by PD-L1 expression levels (≥50%).
  • The results indicated no significant difference in OS related to varying PD-L1 expression levels, suggesting that higher PD-L1 levels do not correlate with improved survival outcomes in these patients.

Omission of staging PET/CT linked to reduced survival in stage III non-small cell lung cancer: insights from the LUCAS project real-world data.

Transl Lung Cancer Res

July 2024

Department of Pneumology and Phthisiology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital in Pilsen, Charles University, Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Background: Stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a highly heterogeneous stage due to its subgroups (IIIA-IIIC) comprising both resectable and unresectable tumors. Accurate determination of the extent of the disease is essential for excluding stage IV and choosing the optimal treatment regimen. Whole body positron emission tomography and computed tomography scan (PET/CT) is recommended as an initial staging imaging in locally advanced NSCLC.

Sci Rep

March 2024

Department of Social and Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, Charles University, Akademika Heyrovského 1203/8, Hradec Králové, Prague, Czech Republic.

Pharmacist's geriatric assessment can provide valuable insights into potential deprescribing targets, while including important information on various health-related domains. Data collected from a geriatric assessment questionnaire, for 388 patients, from the Croatian cohort of the EuroAgeism H2020 ESR 7 international project, along with guideline-based deprescribing criteria, were used to analyse potentially inappropriate prescribing of four medication groups (benzodiazepines (BZN), proton pump inhibitors (PPI), opioids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)), and to assess the deprescribing potential. Binary logistic regression was used to explore the effects of age, gender, number of medicines and diagnoses, self-reported health, frailty score, and healthcare utilization on the likelihood of needing deprescribing.
