To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of wasting, spinal curvature abnormalities and multimorbidity among children and adolescents aged 6-18 in Inner Mongolia and explore the related factors of these two health problems. In September 2022, a stratified random cluster sampling method was employed to select 188 635 children and adolescents aged 6-18 in Inner Mongolia for physical examinations and questionnaire surveys. Data on height, weight, as well as dietary behavior, physical activity, classroom environment, academic tasks, writing posture, and screen behavior were collected.

What Is Already Known About This Topic?: The early onset of puberty increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Limited research has focused on the association between the onset of puberty, based on sudden increases in height, and obesity in late adolescence.

What Is Added By This Report?: This report assessed the age at take-off and age at peak height velocity for children and adolescents in China from 2012 to 2020.

Aim: We have previously reported the mid-term efficacy and safety of tacrolimus (Tac)-based immunosuppressive therapy in such patients, and herein, we aimed to determine their long-term outcomes (over 10 years).

Methods: We retrospectively evaluate the data of 13 consecutive patients with biopsy-proven long-standing LN who underwent a long-term Tac-based treatment regimen. Tac was administered once daily at a dose of 3 mg as reinduction or maintenance treatment.

Background And Hypothesis: There are limited data on the long-term outcomes and risk factors for non-recovery after development of rituximab (RTX)-associated persistent hypogammaglobulinaemia among children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (NS).

Methods: A nationwide Japanese survey was conducted to determine the prognosis of patients with childhood-onset idiopathic NS who developed persistent hypogammaglobulinaemia after RTX administration. Specifically, predictors of IgG level recovery and risk factors for serious infection were examined.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study combined data from two major trials, SPRINT and ACCORD-BP, to evaluate how intensive blood pressure (BP) treatment can reduce stroke and death risks compared to standard treatment.
  • - A total of 834 patients experienced stroke or death events over an average follow-up of 3.68 years, with the intensive BP group showing a 24% lower risk of these events.
  • - The benefits of intensive BP treatment were most significant for participants in the highest stroke risk category, suggesting that such treatment is especially advantageous for those who are already at greater risk.

Background: One of the causes of tubulointerstitial nephritis is viral infection, with innate immune responses affecting its pathogenesis. Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) recognizes viral infections and acts antivirally by activating signaling to produce inflammatory cytokines/chemokines, including C-C motif chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5) and interferon-β (IFN-β). Although cylindromatosis lysine 63 deubiquitinase (CYLD) is known to be associated with tubulointerstitial nephritis and renal function, its role in the antiviral innate immune response in tubular epithelial cells remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on Yunnan province in China to analyze the trends in depressive symptoms among adolescents (ages 12-18) over four years, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2018 to 2022.
  • Using a longitudinal observational method, researchers assessed data from the Students' Health Survey and diagnosed depressive symptoms with the CES-D scale, comparing variables like gender, age, and residence.
  • Results indicated that the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms increased from 28.26% in 2018 to 36.33% in 2022, highlighting a notable rise during the COVID-19 period, with risks significantly elevated compared to the pre-pandemic phase.

Viral infections in tubular epithelial cells lead to the production of inflammatory cytokines by innate immunity, causing tubulointerstitial nephritis. TLR3 recognizes viral infections and acts via the activation of interferon (IFN)/IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). This study investigates the role of ISG56, a representative ISG, in TLR3 signaling in cultured human renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (hRPTECs).

Purpose: A large number of epidemiological studies have shown that myopia is a complex disease involving genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of PAX6 gene methylation in myopia in Chinese adolescents.

Methods: Eighty junior high school students were divided into four groups based on their vision test results: mild myopia, moderate myopia, severe myopia, and non-myopia control.

There is growing evidence that the prevalence of high blood pressure is increasing, and it may have serious consequences. However, research on the prevalence and influencing factors of high blood pressure among primary and secondary school students is still relatively scarce. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of high blood pressure among primary and secondary school students in Shenyang, in order to provide scientific evidence for the prevention and management of this disease.

Objective: Although the effect of vitamins on the risk of mortality in diabetic patients has been reported, most studies focus on individual vitamins. However, humans are often exposed to multiple vitamins simultaneously in daily life. Therefore, it is worth exploring the effects of co-exposure to multiple vitamins on the risk of mortality in diabetic patients.

Background: In addition to regulating the antiviral response, increased expression of Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) in resident renal cells plays a role in developing some forms of glomerulonephritis. TLR3 activation leads to type I interferon (IFN) production, which induces the expression of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs). However, the role of ISG20 expression in resident renal cells remains unclear.

Hen egg only diets support healthy aging in adult mice.

J Anim Physiol Anim Nutr (Berl)

July 2023

Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Nagoya Women's Uuniversity, Nagoya, Japan.

Hen eggs (eggs) are a conventional food, known to contain the nutrients required for the growth of chicken embryos. These eggs are rich in important proteins and fats, with a very low amount of carbohydrate, and include all of the vitamins and minerals needed for the development of mice. We found that mice fed eggs grew to the same weight as mice fed a normal chow diet (ND) and remained healthy until the 20-months.
