Background: Some nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) may cause depletion of mitochondrial (mt) DNA in liver by inhibiting polymerase-gamma. mtDNA depletion may contribute to lactic acidosis, steatohepatitis and liver failure.
Objective: To evaluate the long-term mitochondrial toxicity of NRTI combinations.
