Histopathology, the standard method to assess BM in hematologic malignancies such as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), suffers from notable limitations in both research and clinical settings. BM biopsies in patients fail to detect disease heterogeneity, may yield a nondiagnostic sample, and cannot be repeated frequently in clinical oncology. Endpoint histopathology precludes monitoring disease progression and response to therapy in the same mouse over time, missing likely variations among mice.

The Genetic Epidemiology of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPDGene) study, which began in 2007, is an ongoing multicenter observational cohort study of more than 10,000 current and former smokers. The study is aimed at understanding the etiology, progression, and heterogeneity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In addition to genetic analysis, the participants have been extensively characterized by clinical questionnaires, spirometry, volumetric inspiratory and expiratory computed tomography, and longitudinal follow-up, including follow-up computed tomography at 5 years after enrollment.

Gold nanoparticles have unique properties that are highly dependent on their shape and size. Synthetic methods that enable precise control over nanoparticle morphology currently require shape-directing agents such as surfactants or polymers that force growth in a particular direction by adsorbing to specific crystal facets. These auxiliary reagents passivate the nanoparticles' surface, and thus decrease their performance in applications like catalysis and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

Unlabelled: Here, evidence suggests that nitric oxide synthases (NOS) of tumor cells, in contrast with normal tissues, synthesize predominantly superoxide and peroxynitrite. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, the underlying mechanism for this uncoupling is a reduced tetrahydrobiopterin:dihydrobiopterin ratio (BH4:BH2) found in breast, colorectal, epidermoid, and head and neck tumors compared with normal tissues. Increasing BH4:BH2 and reconstitution of coupled NOS activity in breast cancer cells with the BH4 salvage pathway precursor, sepiapterin, causes significant shifts in downstream signaling, including increased cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG) activity, decreased β-catenin expression, and TCF4 promoter activity, and reduced NF-κB promoter activity.
