Background/objectives: Malnutrition coexisting with abdominal adipose tissue accumulation bring a double burden on prognosis. More recently, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) has reached a novel consensus concerning the diagnostic criteria, that is, a two-step modality combining nutritional risk screening and subsequent phenotypic/etiologic parameters for comprehensive evaluation in hopes of harmonizing the malnutrition diagnosis. We aimed to elucidate their synergistic impact among inpatients with decompensated cirrhosis concerning long-term mortality.

The traditional Chinese herb hawthorn is gaining attention for its potential to lower lipid levels due to its active components that positively influence lipid metabolism. Our meta-analysis of fourteen randomized controlled trials compared traditional Chinese medicine containing hawthorn with conventional lipid-lowering drugs for hyperlipidemia. Hawthorn-based medicine showed promise in reducing total cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, albeit less effective than standard drugs in lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

As one of the most common post-translational modification of proteins, protein phosphorylation plays a vital role in many physiological processes. The enrichment of phosphopeptides is highly important before the mass spectrometry detection since phosphopeptides are susceptible to interferences from high-abundance non-phosphopeptides. In this study, we designed a novel magnetic composite (FeO@PDA-PEI-Fe) for phosphopeptide enrichment with a facile protocol.

Background: Myosteatosis indicates pathological fat infiltration in muscles and is regarded as a distinct disease from sarcopenia. This muscular condition exhibits a link to muscle fiber disarrangement coinciding with disrupted muscle contractility and weakened mechanical action, mirrored as decreased muscle quality. However, the relationship between handgrip strength (HGS) and computed tomography-defined myosteatosis among cirrhosis is unclear.

It is still a challenge to prevent the formation of bacterial biofilms on the surfaces of oral implants. A chemical peptide with binding and antibacterial properties may be a promising agent if used to modify titanium (Ti) surfaces to inhibit biofilm formation. In this study, peptides were designed by linking the antimicrobial sequence derived from human β-defensin-3 (hBD-3) to the Ti-binding peptide-1 (TBP-1) sequence by using a triple glycine (G) linker.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the use of the nanocapsule sequential delivery of BMP-2 and SDF-1α through the peripheral circulatory system to promote the healing of osteoporotic fractures.
Methods: Based on increased vascular permeability in the early hematoma environment around the fracture and the presence of a large number of matrix metalloproteinase MMPs in the inflammatory environment, we designed MMP-sensitive nanocapsules which were formed viain situ free-radical polymerization on the surface of grow factors with 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and the bisacryloylated VPLGVRTK peptide. The antiphagic effect and biological activity of the growth factors for the nanomicrocapsule delivery system were tested by cell experiments.

Introduction: Intraspinal tumours are common diseases in neurosurgery and spinal surgery. Due to the fact that most of them are benign tumours, surgical resection is usually effective, and it is also the main treatment for these tumours. To maintain the stability of the spine and to reduce the incidence of kyphosis, pedicle screw fixation is required after traditional laminectomy, but there are many complications.

Compared with most nondegradable or slowly degradable bone repair materials, bioactive biodegradable porous scaffolds with certain mechanical strengths can promote the regeneration of both new bone and vasculature while the cavity created by their degradation can be replaced by the infiltration of new bone tissue. Mineralized collagen (MC) is the basic structural unit of bone tissue, and silk fibroin (SF) is a natural polymer with adjustable degradation rates and superior mechanical properties. In this study, a three-dimensional porous biomimetic composite scaffold with a two-component SF-MC system was constructed based on the advantages of both materials.

Background: Previous studies have investigated the imaging changes of the paravertebral muscles (PVM) in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS); however, most of these studies focused on the apical vertebra (AV) level or compared with the average of the whole-segment measurement. In this study, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to analyze the degenerative characteristics of the multifidus (MF) in patients with DLS at three levels of scoliosis (upper end vertebra [UEV], AV, and lower end vertebra [LEV]).
Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional study.
