The relative contribution of CYP2C9 allelic variants to the pharmacokinetics (PK) of ibuprofen (IBP) enantiomers has been studied extensively, but the potential clinical benefit of pharmacogenetically guided IBP treatment is not evident yet. The role of AKR1D1*36C>T (rs 1872930) allelic variant in interindividual variability of CYP450 mediated drug metabolism was recently elucidated. A total of 27 healthy male subjects, volunteers in IBP single-dose two-way cross-over bioequivalence studies were genotyped for CYP2C9*2, CYP2C9*3 and AKR1D1*36 polymorphisms.

The active metabolite of azathioprine, 6-thioguanine nucleotide (6-TGN) is the main component responsible for the immunosuppressive effect in treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between the concentration of 6-thioguanine nucleotide and disease activity, azathioprine-related adverse effects and time duration of treatment in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Genetic variation in the regulation, expression and activity of genes coding for Phase I, Phase II drug metabolizing enzymes (DMEs) and drug targets, can be defining factors for the variability in both the effectiveness and occurrence of drug therapy side effects. Information regarding the geographic structure and multi-ethnic distribution of clinically relevant genetic variations is becoming increasingly useful for improving drug therapy and explaining inter-individual and inter-ethnic differences in drug response. This study summarizes our current knowledge about the frequency distribution of the most common allelic variants in three broad gene categories: the Phase I oxidation-cytochrome P450 (CYP450) family (CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP3A5, CYP2D6); the Phase II conjugation (GSTT1, SULT1A1; UGT1A1) and drug target (TYMS-TSER, MTHFR and VKORC1) in the population of the Republic of Macedonia and compares the information obtained with data published for other indigenous European populations.

Background/aim: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are perceived to play a key role in tumor invasion and metastasis by their capacity to degrade basement membranes and extracellular matrix proteins. The aim of this study was to investigate the expressions of MMP-2, MMP-7 and MMP-9 in tumor tissue and their relation to clinicopathologic features in patients with colorectal cancer.
Methods: Specimens of resected colorectal cancer and surrounding normal tissue of 82 patients were immunohistochemically stained for MMP-2, MMP-7 and MMP-9.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the most common CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 polymorphisms in the population of Macedonia and compare them with the global geographic data reported from different ethnic populations. In total, 184 healthy volunteers from the general population were included. Genotypes for the CYP2C9 (*2 [rs1799853] and *3[rs1057910]) and CYP2C19 (*2-[rs4244285] and *17 [rs12248560]) polymorphisms were detected by Real-Time PCR using TaqMan SNP genotyping assay.

The main biologically active constituents of Aronia melanocarpa fruit juice (AMFJ) are polyphenolics, amongst them flavonoids, mainly anthocyanins. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of AMFJ (5 and 10 mL/kg) on anxiety using the social interaction test, on locomotor activity in the open field test and on working memory in the object recognition test in rats. AMFJ showed an anxiolytic-like effect which was demonstrated by a dose-dependent increase in the time of active social contacts between the test partners.

A method of determination of Co, Cu, Pb and Ni in nanogram quantities from aragonite is presented. Flotation and extraction of Co, Cu, Pb and Ni is suggested as methods for elimination matrix interferences of calcium. The method of flotation is performed by iron(III) hexamethylenedithiocarbamate, Fe(HMDTC)(3), as a colloid precipitate collector.

Background: The synergistic effects of the combined ACE and NEP inhibition is based both on the blockade of angiotensin II synthesis and degradation of vasoactive peptides and NEP substrates (ANP, arginine, endothelial cells, guanylat cyclase etc.), including bradykinine and the natriuretic peptides, which contribute to vasodilatation, diuresis and improvement of myocardial function.
Objectives: This study was undertaken to asses the hypotensive effect of a dual ACE/NEP inhibitor (omapatrilat) in comparison to a NEP inhibitor (candoxatril) and ACE inhibitor (enalapril) in SHRS.

Background: Hypertension is associated with impaired endothelial function, which can be explained by a decrease in nitric oxide (NO) generation or by an enhanced inactivation of NO after its release from endothelial cells.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of long-term treatment with losartan, an angiotensin II (AT1) receptor antagonist, on endothelial dysfunction in an animal model of hypertension in relation to the nitric oxide system.
Methods: Losartan was administered to 48 sixteen-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats, in a dose of 10 mg/kg bw/daily in drinking water, for 12 weeks.
