Article Synopsis
  • The sap of (Miq). Koidz. contains high levels of chalcones, which are known for their protective effects on kidney cells damaged by cisplatin.
  • The study investigates how sap extract (ASEE) impacts kidney function and specific protein expressions in rats exposed to cisplatin, using doses of 1000 and 1500 mg/kg for 10 days.
  • Results show that ASEE significantly lowers body weight, creatinine, and kidney injury marker levels, indicating potential nephroprotective effects, likely due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Introduction: irrational antibiotic use can result in antibiotic resistance, which, in turn, can lead to increased morbidity and mortality, as well as high treatment costs. This phenomenon is more common in children because they are a population that often receives antibiotics. This study aimed to evaluate antibiotic use in pediatric patients in Indonesia using the Defined Daily Doses (DDD) method and the WHO Access, Watch, and Reserve Classification (AWaRe 2021).

We analyzed the precise ligand:receptor interactions required for activation of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M, a prototypical G protein-coupled receptor and potential diabetes target. Starting from literature-known compounds and docking solutions, ligands were tailored for the modulation of this receptor's activation. Several aspects of the structure-activity relationship of agonists were investigated in atomistic detail, in order to delineate how the receptor can be activated via the orthosteric site.

The effectiveness of lapatinib (LAP) and trastuzumab (TRZ), the first-line therapies for HER2 breast cancer, has been limited owing to the development of acquired resistance in patients with HER2. This study aimed to investigate the alterations in metabolic signatures in LAP-resistant HCC1954 and TRZ-resistant HCC1954 and pathways in human HER2 breast cancer cells using liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and enrichment analysis. The HCC1954 parental cells were sequentially treated 13 rounds with LAP or TRZ to develop resistant cells and then tested for their cytotoxicity using the MTT assay.

Off-Label Pediatric Medication Prescribing and Dispensing: Awareness and Attitudes among Community Pharmacists: A Questionnaire-Based Study.

Pharmacy (Basel)

September 2024

Department of Analytical Chemistry and Drug Analysis, Faculty of Pharmacy, 'George Emil Palade' University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures, 540142 Targu Mures, Romania.

Off-label practice in pediatrics requires relentless engagement from all the health professionals involved. Community pharmacists are the last ones in the prescribing-dispensing chain; therefore, they have the key responsibility of verifying the correctness of a treatment. A cross-sectional study was conducted for assessing the awareness and views of Romanian community pharmacists, regarding off-label drugs in the pediatric population, through a 28-item questionnaire comprising five sections of different topics (general knowledge, frequency of prescribing and dispensing off-label medication, views, and attitudes).

Image Analysis in Histopathology and Cytopathology: From Early Days to Current Perspectives.

J Imaging

October 2024

Department of Pathology, George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Targu Mures, 540139 Targu Mures, Romania.

Both pathology and cytopathology still rely on recognizing microscopical morphologic features, and image analysis plays a crucial role, enabling the identification, categorization, and characterization of different tissue types, cell populations, and disease states within microscopic images. Historically, manual methods have been the primary approach, relying on expert knowledge and experience of pathologists to interpret microscopic tissue samples. Early image analysis methods were often constrained by computational power and the complexity of biological samples.

Objectives: To evaluate the prognostic value (total mortality + repeated hospitalization for heart failure (HF)) of ultrasound diagnostic methods in patients with acute decompensated HF (ADHF).

Methods: The subjects were patients with chronic HF, who were hospitalized for ADHF. Using ultrasound methods-lung ultrasound, ultrasound assessment of hepatic venous congestion as per the venous excess ultrasound (VExUS) protocol, and indirect elastometry-we assessed the number of B-lines, hepatic venous congestion, and liver density of the patients.

Background: The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently of great concern due to its risk of developing T2DM and cardiovascular disease. The development of NAFLD may be initiated by de novo lipogenesis in the hepatocytes. Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK), are responsible for the lipogenesis mechanism.
