Thromboprophylaxis for children hospitalized with COVID-19 and MIS-C.

Background: Limited data exist about effective regimens for pharmacological thromboprophylaxis in children with acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).

Objectives: Study the outcomes of institutional thromboprophylaxis protocol for primary venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention in children hospitalized with acute COVID-19/MIS-C.

Methods: This single-center retrospective cohort study included consecutive children (aged less than 21 years) with COVID-19/MIS-C who received tailored intensity thromboprophylaxis, primarily with low-molecular-weight heparin, from April 2020 through October 2021.

Drug repositioning in epilepsy reveals novel antiseizure candidates.

Objective: Epilepsy treatment falls short in ~30% of cases. A better understanding of epilepsy pathophysiology can guide rational drug development in this difficult to treat condition. We tested a low-cost, drug-repositioning strategy to identify candidate epilepsy drugs that are already FDA-approved and might be immediately tested in epilepsy patients who require new therapies.

Acute vitreoretinal trauma and inflammation after traumatic brain injury in mice.

Objective: Limited attention has been given to ocular injuries associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The retina is an extension of the central nervous system and evaluation of ocular damage may offer a less-invasive approach to gauge TBI severity and response to treatment. We aim to characterize acute changes in the mouse eye after exposure to two different models of TBI to assess the utility of eye damage as a surrogate to brain injury.

Mutation of orthologous prickle genes causes a similar epilepsy syndrome in flies and humans.

Objective: Genetically tractable fruit flies have been used for decades to study seizure disorders. However, there is a paucity of data specifically correlating fly and human seizure phenotypes. We have previously shown that mutation of orthologous PRICKLE genes from flies to humans produce seizures.
