The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in Komiza on the island of Vis, known for its cases of favism.
Researchers screened 302 men using a fluorescent spot test, later corroborating results with a quantitative UV method.
The findings revealed that 5.96% of the men were G6PD deficient, notably higher than the 0.75% prevalence in Dalmatia, suggesting the need for newborn screening for G6PD deficiency on the island and further studies in the region.
