Purpose: Black birthing parents and their newborns disproportionately experience newborn drug testing for prenatal substance exposure by health care professionals (HCPs), which contributes to Child Protective Services (CPS) reporting, family separation, and termination of parental rights. This qualitative study aims to interrogate dominant power structures by exploring knowledge, attitudes, and experiences of HCPs and CPS professionals regarding the influence of structural racism on inequities in newborn drug testing practices.

Methods: We conducted semistructured interviews with 30 physicians, midwives, nurses, social workers, and CPS professionals guided by an explanatory framework, and conducted inductive, reflexive thematic analysis.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic introduced a myriad of changes that negatively impacted resident physicians' well-being. Communication from program leadership may mitigate resident stress during times of crisis, yet literature supporting this premise is scant, and best communication practices remain uncertain. This qualitative study aimed to identify stressors to residents and explore the influence of residency program leadership's communication on emotional stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Postgrad Med

March 2024

Department of Hospital Medicine and Department of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, Outcomes Research Consortium, Cleveland, OH, USA.

Plasma is overused as a blood product worldwide; however, data supporting appropriate use of plasma is scant. Its most common utilization is for treatment of coagulopathy in actively bleeding patients; it is also used for coagulation optimization prior to procedures with specific coagulation profile targets. A baseline literature review in PUBMED and Google Scholar was done (1 January 2000 to 1 June 2023), utilizing the following search terms: plasma, fresh frozen plasma, lyophilized plasma, indications, massive transfusion protocol, liver disease, warfarin reversal, cardiothoracic surgery, INR < 2.

Improving Procedural Skill Confidence in Pediatric Residents: A Longitudinal Simulation-Based Workshop Curriculum.

MedEdPORTAL

July 2023

Associate Program Director, Kaiser Permanente Northern California Pediatric Residency Program; Assistant Chief and Faculty Hospitalist, Department of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center.

Introduction: Exit surveys among our pediatric residency graduates found 50% were not confident performing required procedures. While procedural competency poses many curricular challenges, simulation is an effective educational modality many programs have adopted, though often only through onetime workshops limited to single procedures, clinical settings, or levels of training. We sought to develop a comprehensive, recurring, yearlong, simulation-based curriculum covering many important pediatric procedures.

Acad Pediatr

January 2024

Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine (ME Wang, W Ip, and AR Schroeder), Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, Calif. Electronic address:
