The cadherins are homotypic adhesion proteins that are important in cell sorting during organogenesis. Classical cadherins include several different types that show tissue-specific expression. Cell lineage-specific expression of different cadherin subtypes can differentiate morphologically similar but histogenetically distinct tumors.
