Coronary atherosclerosis (or coronary heart disease [CHD]) is a common cardiovascular disease that seriously damages human health. Percutaneous coronary stent implantation represents the primary treatment option for severe CHD in clinical practice; meanwhile, dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is widely used to reduce the risk of postoperative thrombosis. Although the mechanisms of action of the two most commonly used antiplatelet drugs, aspirin and clopidogrel, remain unclear, clinical studies have shown that some patients are susceptible to stent thrombosis-antiplatelet resistance (high on-treatment platelet reactivity [HTPR])-despite using these drugs.

By conducting genetic testing of hereditary hearing loss in pregnant women within 17 weeks of gestation in Dali areas, the importance of genetic testing and genetic counseling during pregnancy was emphasized. Twenty-one mutation sites of 4 hearing loss genes, including , , and , were detected by PCR amplification technology. The positive ratio, mutation ratio and ethnic distribution of positive samples were statistically described.

The impact of Sodium Houttuyniae (SH) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI has been investigated extensively. However, it remains ambiguous whether ferroptosis participates in this process. This study aimed to find out the impacts and probable mechanisms of SH on LPS-induced ferroptosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare cancers that primarily occur in the digestive tract and bronchi, with intraspinal NETs being particularly uncommon, often metastasizing from other areas and presenting with vague symptoms.
  • - A 59-year-old male patient with persistent right lower limb pain, numbness, and weakness was diagnosed with primary intraspinal NET through MRI and subsequent pathological examination.
  • - After surgical resection, the patient showed significant improvement in symptoms, highlighting the importance of proper diagnosis and timely imaging to avoid misdiagnosis of intraspinal NETs, which can be confused with common lumbar conditions.

To analyze the surgical efficacy and safety of tympanoplasty with and without mastoidectomy for the treatment of active simple chronic suppurative otitis media(CSOM), and to investigate whether mastoidectomy can be avoided in tympanoplasty for active CSOM. The clinical data of 55 patients(55 ears) with active CSOM were retrospectively analyzed. Based on the development of the mastoid process and the upper tympanic chamber, patients who met the criteria for wall-up mastoidectomy were classified as group A (30 patients), and underwent tympanoplasty combined with wall-up mastoidectomy.

  • Scrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, is a serious disease that can lead to various complications, but central nervous system involvement is rare.
  • A 17-year-old male with fever and headaches was initially diagnosed with a CNS infection, but standard treatments weren't effective, leading to further testing.
  • The diagnosis was updated to scrub typhus with meningitis after detecting the pathogen, and treatment with doxycycline led to a successful recovery, highlighting the importance of considering scrub typhus in similar patient cases.

Rationale: Epistaxis is one of the common emergencies in otolaryngology. There are many causes of epistaxis, but reports of epistaxis due to nasal foreign bodies like leeches are rare.

Patient Concerns: A 55-year-old male presented with "repeated epistaxis for over 20 days.

Studies have shown that a series of molecular events caused by oxidative stress is associated with ferroptosis and oxidation after ischemic stroke (IS). Differential analysis was performed to identify differentially expressed mRNA (DEmRNAs) between IS and control groups. Critical module genes were identified using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA).

Article Synopsis
  • rTMS has the potential to improve recovery in individuals with poststroke aphasia (PSA), but previous studies haven't pinpointed the best treatment parameters for maximum effectiveness.
  • This meta-analysis reviewed data from 18 randomized controlled trials totaling 387 participants to determine the optimal rTMS variables for treating PSA.
  • Findings suggest a trend indicating that higher total pulses (40,000) correlate with better treatment outcomes, although other variables showed no significant correlations.

Background: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is a putative Alzheimer's disease (AD) precursor without objective neuropsychological deficits. The hippocampus plays an important role in cognitive function and emotional responses and is generally aberrant in SCD. However, previous studies have mainly focused on static functional connectivity (sFC) by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in SCD individuals, and it remains unclear whether hippocampal dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) changes exist in SCD and whether those changes are associated with subtle changes in cognitive function or affect.

Shared and specific dynamics of brain activity and connectivity in amnestic and nonamnestic mild cognitive impairment.

CNS Neurosci Ther

December 2022

Center for Geriatric Neuroscience, The Affiliated Brain Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Memory Clinic, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.

Aims: The present study aimed to compare temporal variability in the spontaneous fluctuations of activity and connectivity between amnestic MCI (aMCI) and nonamnestic MCI (naMCI), which enhances the understanding of their different pathophysiologies and provides targets for individualized intervention.

Methods: Sixty-five naMCI and 48 aMCI subjects and 75 healthy controls were recruited. A sliding window analysis was used to evaluate the dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (dALFF), dynamic regional homogeneity (dReHo), and dynamic functional connectivity (dFC).

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms Mediated the Relationship Between Odor Identification and Cognition in Alzheimer's Disease Spectrum: A Structural Equation Model Analysis.

Front Aging Neurosci

January 2022

Department of Geriatric Psychiatry, Memory Clinic, The Affiliated Brain Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou Huiai Hospital, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Odor identification dysfunction can signal early signs of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is linked to neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), which complicate its predictive value for cognitive decline.
  • Patients with MCI and AD who experience NPS perform worse in both odor identification and cognitive tests compared to those without NPS and healthy controls.
  • The study suggests that when assessing the relationship between odor identification and cognitive decline in AD and MCI, it's essential to consider the influence of affective and psychosis symptoms, as they may mediate this connection.

Background: Odor identification (OI) dysfunction is an early marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but it remains unclear how olfactory-related regions change from stages of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to AD dementia.

Methods: Two hundred and sixty-nine individuals were recruited in the present study. The olfactory-related regions were defined as the regions of interest, and the grey matter volume (GMV), low-frequency fluctuation, regional homogeneity (ReHo), and functional connectivity (FC) were compared for exploring the changing pattern of structural and functional abnormalities across AD, MCI, SCD, and normal controls.

Background: Odor identification dysfunction occurs early in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is considered a preclinical symptom along with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). Nevertheless, whether subjects with SCD are co-symptomatic with odor identification dysfunction remains unclear.

Objective: To compare the degree of odor identification dysfunction and assess the relation between odor identification and cognitive performance in the AD spectrum (including SCD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD).
