Flavor is the quintessential multisensory experience, combining gustatory, retronasal olfactory, and texture qualities to inform food perception and consumption behavior. However, the computations that govern multisensory integration of flavor components and their underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we use rats as a model system to test the hypothesis that taste and smell components of flavor are integrated in a reliability-dependent manner to inform hedonic judgments and that this computation is performed by neurons in the primary taste cortex.

Here, we present a protocol for assessing the impact of a chemogenetic manipulation in a subpopulation of the hypothalamic neurons on aging and lifespan control using a mouse model developed specifically for this purpose. We describe steps for stereotaxic viral injection and assess inter-tissue communication between protein phosphatase 1 regulatory subunit 17 (Ppp1r17)-expressing neurons in the dorsomedial hypothalamus and white adipose tissue. We then detail procedures for lifespan measurements following chemogenetic manipulation in aged mice.

Evidence indicates detectable short-term microstructural changes in the brain within an hour after motor sequence learning, and post-training sleep is believed to contribute to the consolidation of these motor memories, potentially leading to enduring microstructural changes. In this study, we explored how TMR during post-training sleep affects performance gains and delayed microstructural remodeling, using both standard Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and advanced Neurite Orientation Dispersion & Density Imaging (NODDI).

These expressions attempt to define the essential functions and properties of the mammalian or human brain in a simple phrase or sentence, sometimes using metaphors or analogies. We sought to survey the most common phrases of the form 'the brain is…' in the biomedical literature to provide insights into current conceptualizations of the brain.
