Background: Professional identity formation is an important aspect of medical education that can be difficult to translate into formal curricula. The role of arts and humanities programs in fostering professional identity formation remains understudied. Analyzing learners' written reflections, we explore the relationship between an arts-based course and themes of professional identity formation.

Background: Histologic subtyping of lung cancer has significant implications for treatment planning. Accurate diagnosis based on cytology/small biopsy specimens is challenging and frequently determined by morphology, as material is often not sufficient for immunohistochemical studies (IHC). We investigated the concordance between the rates of diagnosis from cytology/small biopsies compared with surgical specimens in patients with squamous cell lung cancer (SCC) and the utility of IHC for diagnostic precision in lung cancer subtyping.

Women With Breast Cancer Who Work For Accommodating Employers More Likely To Retain Jobs After Treatment.

Health Aff (Millwood)

February 2017

Cathy J. Bradley is associate director for population sciences research in the Department of Health Systems, Management, and Policy at the University of Colorado, Denver.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women across the United States, and low-income minority survivors of breast cancer are at increased risk of job loss, compared to higher-income white survivors. Employer accommodations, such as schedule flexibility, have been associated with job retention in higher-income whites, but the role of such accommodations in job retention among low-income minorities is not well understood. We conducted a longitudinal study of 267 employed women ages 18-64 who were undergoing treatment for early-stage breast cancer and spoke English, Chinese, Korean, or Spanish.

Purpose: In previous studies, humanized A33 (huA33) demonstrated modest antitumor activity in chemotherapy-resistant colorectal cancer patients. In addition, unexpected major tumor responses were observed in patients treated with a specific chemotherapy regimen [carmustine, vincristine, fluorouracil, and streptozocin (BOF-Strep)] administered after huA33 protocols. We designed the present Phase I, open label, cohort, dose-escalation study of huA33 and a fixed dose of BOF-Strep to (a) determine the maximum tolerated dose of huA33 immunotherapy administered with chemotherapy, (b) determine whether chemotherapy modifies huA33 immunogenicity, and (c) develop preliminary information regarding antitumor activity.

Purpose: Humanized A33 (huA33; IgG1) monoclonal antibody detects a determinant expressed by 95% of colorectal cancers and can activate immune cytolytic mechanisms. The present study was designed to (a) define the toxicities and maximum tolerated dose of huA33 and (b) determine huA33 immunogenicity.

Experimental Design: Patients (n = 11) with advanced chemotherapy-resistant colorectal cancer received 4-week cycles of huA33 at 10, 25, or 50 mg/m(2)/week.
