Background: Intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis is a leading cause of ischemic stroke and recurrent events due to plaque instability. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging identifies plaque enhancement as a key marker of instability. This study evaluated the efficacy of combined high-intensity statins and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors in plaque stabilization.

Methods: An international survey was conducted with representatives from East Asia (Hong Kong, China, and Japan), South Asia (India and Pakistan), and Southeast Asia (Vietnam and Thailand).

Methods And Results: A prospective cohort of dementia-free subjects was recruited from memory clinics and followed up for 5 years. Annual neurocognitive assessments and twice-yearly brain magnetic resonance imaging scans were performed.

Background And Aims: Metformin is an oral anti-hyperglycemic recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as a preferred initial pharmacologic agent for type 2 diabetes. Metabolic acidosis is a rare yet severe side effect of it. We examined the association of metformin use and dosage on the risk of metabolic acidosis in diabetic patients with different degrees of chronic hepatitis B (CHB)-related cirrhosis and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis: A rare cause of chronic diarrhea.

We report a 45-year-old healthy Chinese woman who presented with chronic diarrhea and iron deficiency anemia, with colonoscopy showing multiple ulcers from cecum to sigmoid on a background of dark-purple mucosa. She was initially suspected to be suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, but the peculiar colonic biopsy findings and computed tomography (CT) imaging features, together with her habit of using Chinese herbal supplements, supported the rare diagnosis of idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis.

Background Behavioral dysexecutive syndrome (BDES) is a common phenomenon following stroke. To date, research has focused mainly on individual behavioral symptoms rather than a more comprehensive characterization of goal-directed behavior in stroke survivors. This cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence and clinical correlates of BDES in Hong Kong stroke survivors.

Brain histopathological study and prognosis in MOG antibody-associated demyelinating pseudotumor.

Our objective was to examine the brain biopsies by histopathology and investigate the prognosis of patients with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated demyelinating pseudotumor. The clinical, MRI, and histological features of two patients with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated demyelinating pseudotumor were reviewed. Both patients were treated with steroid plus rituximab and followed up.

Genetics of cardiovascular and renal complications in diabetes.

The development of debilitating complications represents a major healthcare burden associated with the treatment of diabetes. Despite advances in new therapies for controlling hyperglycemia, the burden associated with diabetic complications remains high, especially in relation to cardiovascular and renal complications. Furthermore, an increasing proportion of patients develop type 2 diabetes at a younger age, putting them at higher risk of developing complications as a result of the increased exposure to hyperglycemia.

Challenges in achieving optimal glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients with declining renal function: The Southeast Asia perspective.

It is well recognised that Asia is at the epicenter of the global type 2 diabetes epidemic. Driven by socioeconomic changes involving industrialization, urbanization and adoption of Western lifestyles, the unprecedented increases in the prevalence of diabetes are particularly evident in Southeast Asia. The impact of diabetes is immense, and despite evidence of the benefit of optimal glucose control in reducing the risk of disease progression and development of macrovascular and microvascular complications, many individuals in this region remain poorly controlled.
