Background: In-hospital adverse events such as cardiac arrest are preceded by abnormalities in physiological data and are associated with high mortality. Healthcare institutions have implemented rapid response systems such as the medical emergency team for early recognition and response to clinical deterioration. Yet, most cardiac catheterisation laboratories, have yet to formally implement a rapid response system, so the nature and frequency of clinical deterioration is unclear and no published data exist.

Introduction: Although a concentric pattern of left ventricular (LV) geometry appears to be common in Friedreich ataxia (FRDA), there is no accepted method for diagnosing LV abnormalities in FRDA, sex and body size have often not been taken into consideration, and it has not been clear whether children and adults should be classified using the same criteria. The aim of this study was to better define the LV geometric changes in FRDA with respect to sex, body size and subject age, and to investigate the relationship of LV changes with genetic severity, as assessed by GAA repeat length within the shorter allele of the FXN gene (GAA1).
Methods: Echocardiography was performed in 216 subjects (68 children, 148 adults), measurements were made at end-diastole of LV internal diameter (LVEDID), septal wall thickness (SWT), LV length (LVEDL) and LV volume (LVEDV), and calculations were made of relative wall thickness (RWT), LV mass and LV ejection fraction (LVEF).
Radiographic vertebral fractures (VFxs) are the most common fractures in osteoporosis and are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and costs. A subset of VFxs manifest clinically, usually with a sudden onset of severe back pain. Romosozumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds and inhibits sclerostin, increasing bone formation and decreasing bone resorption, leading to rapid and large increases in bone density and strength and reduction in fracture risk.

Methods and Results This was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of middle-aged (40-72 years old) adults who were randomly assigned to receive simvastatin 40 mg (n=44) or placebo (n=44) daily for 18 months to evaluate impact on dementia-related biomarkers (primary end points) and measures of vascular health (secondary end points). This analysis focuses on the predetermined secondary end points of changes in central aortic blood pressure, aortic augmentation index, and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation.

Background: Chronic Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is associated with reduced saliva flow rate due to infiltration of HIV and proliferation of CD8 lymphocytes in salivary glands. It is unclear whether HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) increase caries risk. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with dental caries in HIV infected adults attending the Mulago Immune Suppression Syndrome (ISS) clinic in Uganda.

This paper outlines the findings of a scoping review of the literature relating to global citizenship. The purpose of the review was to develop a working definition and associated capabilities for assessing global citizenship among speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which may also prove helpful to other health professionals and for educating tertiary students. Using Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework, key databases were searched, namely Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library and Google Scholar.

We studied the extent to which blood pressure ( BP ) change and evolving LVH contribute to the effect that lisinopril, doxazosin, and amlodipine have on HF compared with chlorthalidone. Methods and Results We conducted causal mediation analysis of ALLHAT (Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial) data (1994-2002; in-trial follow-up).

Intracellular Ca mobilization is a critical modulator of endothelial NO synthase function, and increased cytosolic Ca concentration in endothelial cells is able to induce endothelial NO synthase phosphorylation. Ca release mediated by 3 subtypes of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors ( IP Rs) from the endoplasmic reticulum and subsequent Ca entry after endoplasmic reticulum Ca store depletion has been proposed to be the major pathway to mobilize Ca in endothelial cells.

Background We hypothesized that measures of common carotid artery echolucency and grayscale texture features were associated with cardiovascular disease ( CVD ) risk factors and could predict CVD events. Methods and Results Using a case-cohort design, we measured common carotid artery ultrasound images from 1788 participants in Exam 1 of the MESA study (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis) to derive 4 grayscale features: grayscale median, entropy, gray level difference statistic-contrast, and spatial gray level dependence matrices-angular second moment. CVD risk factor associations were determined by linear regression.

Background: Both the left ventricular (LV) long-axis peak early diastolic lengthening velocity (e`) and long-axis early diastolic excursion (EDExc) decrease with age, but the mechanisms underlying these decreases are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the relative contributions to aging-related decreases in e`and EDExc from LV long-axis systolic excursion (SExc), isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT, as a measure of the speed of relaxation) and LV end-diastolic length (LVEDL).
Methods: The study group was 50 healthy adult subjects of ages 17-75 years with a normal LV ejection fraction.

Background: Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative condition which also has effects on the heart. In 96% of affected individuals FRDA is due to homozygosity of a GAA repeat expansion in intron 1 of the frataxin (FXN) gene. The number of GAA repeats have been shown to relate to disease severity in FRDA, this thought to be via an inverse relationship of GAA repeat number and cellular frataxin levels.

Although the pathogenesis of AFFs is unknown, their identification in bisphosphonate-naïve individuals and in monogenetic bone disorders has led to the hypothesis that genetic factors predispose to AFF. Our aim was to review and summarize the evidence for genetic factors in individuals with AFF.
