Background: Both cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are the leading causes of death worldwide. Although our previous study detected a relationship between CVD and cancer incidence, limited evidence is available regarding the relationship between CVD, cardiovascular risk factors, and cancer mortality.

Methods And Results: A prospective cohort study using data from the continuous NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2016) merged with Medicare and National Death Index mortality data, through December 31, 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • Alopecia areata (AA) is a hair loss disorder that significantly affects quality of life, and studies have shown that the JAK inhibitor deuruxolitinib can promote hair regrowth in affected individuals.
  • A Phase 3 trial tested deuruxolitinib in adults aged 18-65 with severe hair loss, finding that a significant percentage of patients experienced notable improvements in hair regrowth compared to a placebo.
  • Although the treatment was generally well-tolerated with mostly mild side effects, further research is needed to assess long-term safety and the effects of stopping the treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how different methods of assessing depression affect surgical outcomes in patients preparing for lumbar spine surgery, focusing on ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) compared to traditional methods like self-reported questionnaires (PHQ-9) and chart-based diagnoses.
  • The research involved 122 adult patients who recorded their depressive symptoms multiple times daily for three weeks before surgery, with results showing only weak correlations between EMA scores and past depression diagnoses, while EMA scores demonstrated stronger links to surgical outcomes after six months.
  • Findings revealed that patients awaiting spine surgery reported similar non-somatic symptoms of depression to the general population but had significantly more somatic symptoms; EMA assessments proved to be a more reliable indicator of

Article Synopsis
  • Combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA) is a rare and aggressive liver tumor with a worse prognosis compared to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and similar to intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA).
  • There is limited MRI literature regarding cHCC-CCA, making it a challenging diagnosis; however, specific imaging patterns can help distinguish it from other liver tumors.
  • Tumor markers might be useful for identification, and sampling challenges arise due to intratumoral heterogeneity, which can lead to misdiagnosis if biopsies don't capture both histologic components.

Khandelwal).

Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal dominant familial cancer syndrome caused by germline mutations of the tumor protein p53 gene which encodes the p53 transcription factor, also known as the "guardian of the genome." The most common types of cancer found in families with LFS include sarcomas, leukemia, breast malignancies, brain tumors, and adrenocortical cancers. Osteosarcoma and rhabdomyosarcoma are the most common sarcomas.

Objective: Concomitant chest wall resection for locally advanced lung cancer is traditionally performed via an open approach. The safety and effectiveness of minimally invasive approaches for chest wall resections are unknown.

Methods: We used the National Cancer Database to identify patients undergoing lobectomy/bi-lobectomy with concomitant chest wall resection from 2010 to 2020.

Introduction: Multidisciplinary clinics aim to coordinate care between multiple specialties for children with medical complexity yet may result in information overload for caregivers. The after-visit summary (AVS) patient instruction section offers a solution by summarizing visit details and recommendations. No known studies address patient instruction optimization and integration within a multidisciplinary clinic setting.

Purpose Of Review: Evaluation of social influences on cardiovascular care requires a comprehensive analysis encompassing economic, societal, and environmental factors. The increased utilization of electronic health registries provides a foundation for social phenotyping, yet standardization in methodology remains lacking. This review aimed to elucidate the primary approaches to social phenotyping for cardiovascular risk stratification through electronic health registries.

  • Ritlecitinib, a drug being tested for alopecia areata, caused reversible axonal swelling and auditory potential changes in dogs at doses higher than what's approved for humans.
  • * A phase 2a study evaluated the effects of ritlecitinib on auditory and nerve fiber changes in 71 patients, comparing results with a placebo group over 9 months.
  • * Findings showed no significant differences in auditory or nerve fiber measures between the treatment and placebo groups, suggesting that dog toxicity findings may not apply to human patients.

Background And Purpose: Various electrodiagnostic criteria have been developed in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Their performance in a broad representation of GBS patients has not been evaluated. Motor conduction data from the International GBS Outcome Study (IGOS) cohort were used to compare two widely used criterion sets and relate these to diagnostic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis criteria.

Differential diagnosis of dementia remains a challenge in neurology due to symptom overlap across etiologies, yet it is crucial for formulating early, personalized management strategies. Here, we present an artificial intelligence (AI) model that harnesses a broad array of data, including demographics, individual and family medical history, medication use, neuropsychological assessments, functional evaluations and multimodal neuroimaging, to identify the etiologies contributing to dementia in individuals. The study, drawing on 51,269 participants across 9 independent, geographically diverse datasets, facilitated the identification of 10 distinct dementia etiologies.

Background: Machine learning (ML) models can yield faster and more accurate medical diagnoses; however, developing ML models is limited by a lack of high-quality labeled training data. Crowdsourced labeling is a potential solution but can be constrained by concerns about label quality.

Objective: This study aims to examine whether a gamified crowdsourcing platform with continuous performance assessment, user feedback, and performance-based incentives could produce expert-quality labels on medical imaging data.

Microscopic vascular invasion (VI) is predictive of recurrence and benefit from lobectomy in stage I lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) but is difficult to assess in resection specimens and cannot be accurately predicted prior to surgery. Thus, new biomarkers are needed to identify this aggressive subset of stage I LUAD tumors. To assess molecular and microenvironment features associated with angioinvasive LUAD we profiled 162 resected stage I tumors with and without VI by RNA-seq and explored spatial patterns of gene expression in a subset of 15 samples by high-resolution spatial transcriptomics (stRNA-seq).
