A rare case of cyanoacrylate urine bladder urolithiasis in a 60-year-old male is presented. The application of surgical glue (Glubran) as treatment of seroma one month after laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty led to the instillation of the n-butyl cyanoacrylate into the bladder resulting in the formation of a concretion. Infrared spectroscopy of the urine stone removed by cystoscopic laser lithotripsy four months after the surgery allowed the identification of the nature of the stone and revealed cyanoacrylate as the major component and co-monomer methacryloxy sulfolane as the minor component.

Apolipoprotein (APOE) ɛ4 is a well-known risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), but other AD-related gene polymorphisms might also be important, such as the polymorphism within the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene. Carriage of BDNF Val66Met has been associated with faster cognitive decline and greater hippocampal atrophy in cognitively normal elderly. The aim of this study was to develop a biodegradable nanostructured electrospun layer based on collagen (COL), hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HA), vancomycin hydrochloride (V), gentamicin sulphate (G) and their combination (VG) for the treatment of prosthetic joint infections and the prevention of infection during the joint replacement procedure. COL/HA layers containing different amounts of HA (0, 5 and 15 wt%) were tested for the in vitro release kinetics of antibiotics, antimicrobial activity against MRSA, gentamicin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis isolates and cytocompatibility using SAOS-2 bone-like cells. The results revealed that the COL/HA layers released high concentrations of vancomycin and gentamicin for 21 days and performed effectively against the tested clinically-relevant bacterial isolates.

Here, we have identified the interaction site of the contraceptive drug gamendazole using computational modeling. The drug was previously described as a ligand for eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1-α 1 (eEF1A1) and found to be a potential target site for derivatives of 2-phenyl-3-hydroxy-4(1 H)-quinolinones (3-HQs), which exhibit anticancer activity. The interaction of this class of derivatives of 3-HQs with eEF1A1 inside cancer cells was confirmed via pull-down assay.

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic potential of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum levels of neurocytoskeletal proteins and their ratios for the diagnosis of dementias and to assess the differences in neurocytoskeletal proteins between neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation.

Methods: CSF and serum levels of neurofilament light subunits (NFL) and neurofilament heavy subunits (NFH) as well as CSF levels of total tau (t-tau) and phosphorylated tau (p-tau) proteins were determined using ELISA in 20 Alzheimer's disease patients (AD group), 13 patients with other dementias (OD group), 17 patients with inflammatory aseptic neuro-infections (IP), and 20 aged-matched cognitively normal elderly persons (NC group).

Hydrolysis of ATP by Na/K-ATPase, a P-Type ATPase, catalyzing active Na and K transport through cellular membranes leads transiently to a phosphorylation of its catalytical -subunit. Surprisingly, three-dimensional molecular structure analysis of P-type ATPases reveals that binding of ATP to the N-domain connected by a hinge to the P-domain is much too far away from the Asp to allow the transfer of ATP's terminal phosphate to its aspartyl-phosphorylation site. In order to get information for how the transfer of the -phosphate group of ATP to the Asp is achieved, analogous molecular modeling of the M-M loop of ATPase was performed using the crystal data of Na/K-ATPase of different species.

The aim of this study was to develop an osteo-inductive resorbable layer allowing the controlled elution of antibiotics to be used as a bone/implant bioactive interface particularly in the case of prosthetic joint infections, or as a preventative procedure with respect to primary joint replacement at a potentially infected site. An evaluation was performed of the vancomycin release kinetics, antimicrobial efficiency and cytocompatibility of collagen/hydroxyapatite layers containing vancomycin prepared employing different hydroxyapatite concentrations. Collagen layers with various levels of porosity and structure were prepared using three different methods: by means of the lyophilisation and electrospinning of dispersions with 0, 5 and 15wt% of hydroxyapatite and 10wt% of vancomycin, and by means of the electrospinning of dispersions with 0, 5 and 15wt% of hydroxyapatite followed by impregnation with 10wt% of vancomycin.
