Delayed Presentation of Thymoma-Related Aplastic Anemia: An Unusual Presentation of a Rare Complication.

A 68-year-old Caucasian man presented with gross hematuria and oral mucosal bleeding. The patient was known to have an anterior mediastinal mass, highly suspicious for thymoma, which was incidentally identified on imaging, 8 years prior. The patient then declined treatment and was lost to follow-up.

Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Aortic Root Morphology in Hispanic Patients.

Background: The study aim was to evaluate the aortic valve and aortic root morphology in Hispanic patients with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). BAV disease is one of the most common congenital anomaly of the heart, and is associated with abnormalities of the aorta. Interracial differences have been described between Caucasian and African-American patients with BAV, which may have clinical and therapeutic implications.

The hydroxy-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) are used extensively in the treatment of dyslipidemia, and for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease and stroke. They have also demonstrated a benefit in a variety of other disease processes through their non-lipid lowering properties, known as pleiotropic effects. Our paper serves as a focused and updated discussion of the pleiotropic effects of statins in gastrointestinal disorders.
