Approximately 90% of thyroid cancers are differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs), originating from follicular epithelial cells. Out of these, 90% are papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), and 10% are follicular thyroid cancer (FTC). The standard care procedure for PTC includes surgery, followed by radioiodine (RAI) ablation and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppressive therapy.

Despite numerous efforts to define the best therapeutic strategies in advanced melanoma, the response of many patients remains heterogeneous and of short duration. Lenalidomide, an immunomodulating drug, has shown anti-inflammatory, antiangiogenic and anticancer properties in haematological disorders; however, few preclinical data support the rationale for using this drug in melanoma patients. In this study, we investigate lenalidomide's potential role in melanoma by focusing on the in-vitro drug's antiproliferative activity.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate how polarized sodium iodide symporter (NIS) expression may regulate iodide metabolism .
Materials And Methods: Polarized NIS expression was analyzed in tissues that accumulate iodide by the use of immunohistochemistry and polyclonal antibody against the C-terminal end of human NIS (hNIS).
Results: Iodide absorption in the human intestine occurs via NIS expressed in the apical membrane.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) leads to an excess of urgent ambulatory visits, recurrent hospital admissions, morbidity, and mortality regardless of medical and non-medical management of the disease. This excess of risk may be attributable, at least in part, to comorbid conditions influencing the development and progression of CHF. In this perspective, the authors examined and described the most common endocrine disorders observed in patients with CHF, particularly in individuals with reduced ejection fraction, aiming to qualify the risks, quantify the epidemiological burden and discuss about the potential role of endocrine treatment.

Background: In addition to the well-known role played in lactation and parturition, Oxytocin (OT) and OT receptor (OTR) are involved in many other aspects such as the control of maternal and social behavior, the regulation of the growth of the neocortex, the maintenance of blood supply to the cortex, the stimulation of limbic olfactory area to mother-infant recognition bond, and the modulation of the autonomic nervous system via the vagal pathway. Moreover, OT and OTR show antiinflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-pain, anti-diabetic, anti-dyslipidemic and anti-atherogenic effects.
Objective: The aim of this narrative review is to summarize the main data coming from the literature dealing with the role of OT and OTR in physiology and pathologic conditions focusing on the most relevant aspects.

Biologics are an innovative class of drugs that can selectively influence immunological responses at a cellular level. Although their use is usually restricted to some specific diseases, such as autoimmune pathologies and tumors, their "off-label" administration has increased widely in the last years. Drug treatment may induce hypersensitivity reactions which currently lack any gold standard therapy but maybe a future field of application for biologics.

Combined MEK-BRAF inhibition is a well-established treatment strategy in BRAF-mutated cancer, most prominently in malignant melanoma with durable responses being achieved through this targeted therapy. However, a subset of patients face primary unresponsiveness despite presence of the activating mutation at position V600E, and others acquire resistance under treatment. Underlying resistance mechanisms are largely unknown, and diagnostic tests to predict tumor response to BRAF-MEK inhibitor treatment are unavailable.

Methods: Appropriate keywords and MeSH terms were identified and searched in Pubmed.

Background: Obesity is associated with lower serum vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels through several mechanisms. The aim of the study was to examine the possibility of a negative association between fat mass and 25(OH)D levels in a cohort of otherwise healthy overweight and obese subjects, independently of age, sex, blood pressure levels and anthropometric and metabolic parameters.
Materials And Methods: 147 overweight and obese subjects (106 women and 41 men), aged between 18 and 69 years, were enrolled into the study.

We have previously demonstrated that recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) is involved in the regulation of the angiogenic response in multiple myeloma (MM) through a direct effect on macrophages and endothelial cells isolated from the bone marrow of patients with MM. The aim of the present study was designed to determine the effects of rHuEpo on cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) from monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and MM patients by means of in vitro and in vivo assays. rHuEpo treatment reduces the expression of mRNA levels of fibroblast activation markers, namely alpha smooth actin (αSMA) and fibroblast activation protein (FAP) in MGUS and MM CAFs, and of pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8, vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in MM CAFs.

Background And Objective: Although the neurohypophyseal hormones vasopressin (VP) and oxytocin (OT) are mostly known for their role respectively in antidiuresis, and in labour, lactation and maternal behavior, both might exert widespread influences either on emotion and cognition in healthy subjects, showing some gender-related differences. They interact with each other facilitating shifts between positive socially- oriented and defensive states. In fact, VP amplifies the reactivity to stressors showing also beneficial effects on attention, verbal learning as well as memory, whereas OT reduces the amplitude of the stress response, improves emotion processing, and can play a negative effect on memory and verbal learning in healthy individuals.

Background: A great debate in literature exists nowadays on the role of uric acid as a marker of cardiovascular and metabolic organ damage or a risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic disease.
Methods: The study aimed to determine the relationship among serum uric acid and metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis, by means of carotid intima media-thickness, in a cohort of 811 otherwise healthy overweight/obese subjects, without overt atherosclerosis not using any kind of drug.
Results: Uric acid levels were positively related to male gender, waist circumference, BMI, systolic and diastolic pressure levels, fasting insulin, fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, the presence of metabolic syndrome and the number of the components of metabolic syndrome and negatively related to HDL cholesterol levels.

Immunotherapy is one of the most recent systemic treatments to emerge for use in oncology, and is based on the blocking of inhibitory immune checkpoints to potentiate the immune response to cancer. The anti-cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 antibody ipilimumab and anti-programmed cell death protein 1 antibodies, including nivolumab and pembrolizumab, are currently available and widely used, and other immune-inhibiting antibodies are now under intensive investigation. These antibodies have shown efficacy in a growing number of tumor types, following initial observations of their notable effects in melanoma treatment.

Accumulating evidence indicates that the success of cancer therapy depends not only on a combination of adequate procedures (surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) that aim to eliminate all tumor cells, but also on the functional state of the host immune system. HLA and KIR molecules, in particular, are critical to the interactions between tumor cells and both innate and adaptive immune cells such as NK cells and T cells. Different KIR-HLA gene combinations as well as different HLA expression levels on tumor cells associate with variable tumor prognosis and response to treatment.

Background: Osteocalcin, a protein synthesized by osteoblasts during the bone formation phase of bone remodeling, is used as a biomarker for the bone production process, and its serum levels are positively correlated with bone mineral density during treatment with anabolic bone drugs for osteoporosis. Higher fat mass has been shown to be a risk factor for osteoporosis and fragility fractures and body fat and bone interplay through several adipokines and bone-derived molecules, regulating bone remodeling, adipogenesis, body weight control, and glucose homeostasis.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between total osteocalcin levels and obesity, hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

Increasing evidences suggest several biological roles for erythropoietin and its receptor (Epo and EpoR), unrelated to erythropoiesis, including angiogenesis. Here, we detected the expression of EpoR in bone marrow-derived endothelial cells from monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and multiple myeloma (MM) patients (MGECs and MMECs, respectively) and assessed whether Epo plays a role in MGECs- and MMECs-mediated angiogenesis. We show that EpoR is expressed by both MGECs and MMECs even though at a higher level in the first ones.
