The role of the respiratory microbiome has been deeply explored for at least two decades. Its characterization using modern methods is now well-defined, and the impacts of many microorganisms on health and diseases have been elucidated. Moreover, the acquired knowledge in related fields enables patient stratification based on their risk for disease onset, and the microbiome can play a role in defining possible phenotypes.

Cancer patients, especially long cancer survivors, are exposed to several cardio-metabolic diseases, including diabetes, heart failure, and atherosclerosis, which increase their risk of cardiovascular mortality. Therapy with glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) receptor agonists demonstrated several beneficial cardiovascular effects, including atherosclerosis and heart failure prevention. Cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) suggest that GLP-1 RA could exert cardiorenal benefits and systemic anti-inflammatory effects in patients with type-2 diabetes through the activation of cAMP and PI3K/AkT pathways and the inhibition of NLRP-3 and MyD88.

CPX-351 has been approved for patients with therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia (t-AML) or AML with myelodysplasia-related changes (MRC-AML). No extensive data are available on MRD and long-term clinical outcome using CPX-351 in AML in real-life. We retrospectively collected data from 168 patients in 36 centers in France and Italy who had received one or two cycles of induction with CPX-351.

Objectives: Elderly hospitalized patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flare and concurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) are considered at high risk of IBD-related complications. We aimed to evaluate the short, intermediate, and long-term post-discharge complications among these patients.
Methods: A retrospective multicenter cohort study assessing outcomes of elderly individuals (≥60 years) hospitalized for an IBD flare who were tested for CDI (either positive or negative) and discharged.

AA amyloidosis is a prototypic example of systemic amyloidosis: it results from the prolonged overproduction of SAA protein produced in response to chronic inflammation. AA amyloidosis primarily affects the kidneys, liver, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, leading to a variety of symptoms. First, this review examines AA amyloidosis in humans, focusing on pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and diagnosis and then in animals.

Aim: Current non-invasive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) tissue oximetry suffers from suboptimal reproducibility over probe repositioning, hindering clinical threshold establishment. Time Domain-NIRS (TD-NIRS) offers higher precision but lacks sufficient paediatric data, preventing effective clinical application. We aimed to establish reference ranges for cerebral and mid-upper arm (MUA) tissue haemodynamics in paediatric subjects using TD-NIRS and explore correlations with auxological variables.

A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) are key orchestrators of cAMP signaling that act by recruiting protein kinase A (PKA) in proximity of its substrates and regulators to specific subcellular compartments. Modulation of AKAPs function offers the opportunity to achieve compartment-restricted modulation of the cAMP/PKA axis, paving the way to new targeted treatments. For instance, blocking the AKAP activity of phosphoinositide 3-kinase γ (PI3Kγ) improves lung function by inducing cAMP-mediated bronchorelaxation, ion transport, and antiinflammatory responses.

Objective: Digital pathology is an opportunity to revise the routine and old artisanal workflow, moving to standard operating procedures, quality control and reproducibility. Here the results of a survey promoted by the Coordinamento della Medicina di Laboratorio (CRC Med Lab) of the Lombardy region in Italy are reported to shed light on the current situation of digital adoption in the country.
Methods: The survey composed of 58 questions was sent to 60 pathology laboratories.

The impact of hormones on the respiratory system constitutes a multifaceted and intricate facet of human biology. We propose a comprehensive review of recent advancements in understanding the interactions between hormones and pulmonary development and function, focusing on pediatric populations. We explore how hormones can influence ventilation, perfusion, and pulmonary function, from regulating airway muscle tone to modulating the inflammatory response.
