Unlabelled: Air embolism is a rare cause of ischaemic stroke. It is known that air can enter the cerebral arterial circulation from pulmonary venous circulation through a bronchovenous fistula, or in cases of pulmonary barotrauma in deep-sea diving. We describe a case of spontaneous cerebral air embolism against a background of advanced interstitial lung disease (ILD).

Background: Pneumothorax may occur as a complication of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and could pose a potentially life-threatening condition. In this study we sought to investigate the incidence of pneumothorax following CPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), identify possible risk factors, and elucidate its association with outcomes.
Methods: This study was a retrospective data analysis of patients hospitalized following CPR for OHCA.

Background: The aim of this study was to develop a consensus-based set of indicators of high-quality acute moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI) clinical management that can be used to measure structure, process, and outcome factors that are likely to influence patient outcomes. This is the first stage of the PRECISION-TBI program, which is a prospective cohort study that aims to identify and promote optimal clinical management of msTBI in Australia.
Methods: A preliminary set of 45 quality indicators was developed based on available evidence.

Importance: This is the first reported case of fragrance products-induced recurrent oxidative hemolytic anemia in a dog, detailing the successful therapeutic approach employed.
Case Presentation: A 4-year-old intact female Pomeranian dog presented with brown tongue, pigmenturia, peripheral edema, and vomiting. Blood smears revealed a high count of eccentrocytes and Heinz bodies, along with a precipitous decline in packed cell volume and an increase in blood methemoglobin levels, suggesting an oxidative hemolytic crisis.

Accurate prediction of unmeasured muscle excitations can reduce the required wearable surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors, which is a critical factor in the study of physiological measurement. Synergy extrapolation uses synergy excitations as building blocks to reconstruct muscle excitations. However, the practical application of synergy extrapolation is still limited as the extrapolation process utilizes unmeasured muscle excitations it seeks to reconstruct.

Background: Opioid related overdose morbidity and mortality continue to significantly impact rural communities. Nationwide, emergency departments (EDs) have seen an increase in opioid use disorder (OUD)-related visits compared to other substance use disorders (SUD). ED-initiated buprenorphine is associated with increased treatment engagement at 30 days.

Background: Excessive perioperative bleeding is associated with major complications in cardiac surgery, resulting in increased morbidity, mortality, and cost.
Methods: An international expert panel was convened to develop consensus statements on the control of bleeding and management of transfusion and to suggest key quality metrics for cardiac surgical bleeding. The panel reviewed relevant literature from the previous 10 years and used a modified RAND Delphi methodology to achieve consensus.

Background: Carbon monoxide (CO) results from incomplete combustion of carbon-based materials, causing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, confusion, and, in severe cases, unconsciousness. Normobaric oxygen therapy (NBOT) is the standard therapy, whereas hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is recommended in severe cases of organ damage. This study examined the early and late adverse outcomes in patients with severe CO poisoning.

Background: Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORN) is a late complication of radiation therapy. Radiation-induced fibrosis is the most likely mechanism for developing ORN, and statins are effective against radiation-induced fibrosis. However, no reports have indicated the direct effectiveness of statins in treating ORN.

Antibiotic beads can be used to treat surgical infections. In this study, polylactide-polyglycolide (PLGA) was mixed with vancomycin, the osteogenic enhancer lithium chloride (LiCl), and hot compression to form PLGA-vancomycin-LiCl delivery beads to treat bone infection. An elution method was used to characterize in vitro release characteristics of vancomycin and Li over a 42-day period.

Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis (RHC) is a chronic inflammatory disease in patients undergoing radiation therapy that causes a cluster of symptoms which may have a latent period of months to years. The current non-invasive treatments include drug treatment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which has been widely applied for RHC so far but with limited evidence. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify the effects and safety of HBOT for RHC.

Background: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is widely used to treat bone defects, but the correlation of high oxygen concentration and pressure to osteogenesis is unclear.
Methods: Bilateral monocortical tibial defect surgeries were performed on 12-week-old Prrx1-Cre; Rosa26-tdTomato and Prrx1-Cre; Piezo1 mice. Daily HBO treatment was applied on post-surgery day (PSD) 1-9; and daily mechanical loading on tibia was from PSD 5 to 8.

Nitrogen narcosis is a neurological syndrome that manifests when humans or animals encounter hyperbaric nitrogen, resulting in a range of motor, emotional, and cognitive abnormalities. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is known for its significant involvement in regulating motivation, cognition, and action. However, its specific contribution to nitrogen narcosis-induced hyperlocomotion and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Maintaining cognitive integrity is crucial during underwater operations, which can significantly impact work performance and risk severe accidents. However, the cognitive effects of underwater operations and their underlying mechanism remain elusive, posing great challenges to the medical protection of professionals concerned. Here, we found that a single underwater operation session affects cognition in a time-dependent model.

Background: We aimed to estimate the effect of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) on neurological outcome and mortality, when compared to conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CCPR), using an individual patient data meta-analysis (IPDMA).
Methods: A systematic literature search was performed up to the 20th of October 2022 in the PubMed, EMBASE and CENTRAL databases. For observational studies with unmatched populations, a propensity score including age, location of arrest and initial rhythm was used to match ECPR and CCPR patients in a 1:1 ratio.
