Background: Simple hepatic cysts are commonly detected in the general population, both solitary and associated with Adult Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). Laparoscopic fenestration is a surgical option adopted as first-line treatment and to treat complications. The techniques reported in the literature are associated with cyst recurrence in up to 41% of cases.

Article Synopsis
  • - Periodontitis is linked to a higher risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) and can worsen the prognosis due to increased inflammation and harmful agents from periodontal pathogens.
  • - A study evaluated the prevalence and severity of periodontitis among CRC patients, finding it present in over 94% of those with stage I/II and 100% in stages III/IV, with severe periodontitis more common in advanced stages.
  • - The findings indicate a significant association between severe periodontitis and CRC but no correlation with patients' general or tumor characteristics and drug therapies.

Metabolomic Approaches for Detection and Identification of Biomarkers and Altered Pathways in Bladder Cancer.

Int J Mol Sci

April 2022

Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation-Urology, Andrology and Kidney Transplantation Unit, University of Bari, 70124 Bari, Italy.

Metabolomic analysis has proven to be a useful tool in biomarker discovery and the molecular classification of cancers. In order to find new biomarkers, and to better understand its pathological behavior, bladder cancer also has been studied using a metabolomics approach. In this article, we review the literature on metabolomic studies of bladder cancer, focusing on the different available samples (urine, blood, tissue samples) used to perform the studies and their relative findings.

Novel Insights into Autophagy and Prostate Cancer: A Comprehensive Review.

Int J Mol Sci

March 2022

Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation-Urology, Andrology and Kidney Transplantation Unit, University of Bari, 70124 Bari, Italy.

Autophagy is a complex process involved in several cell activities, including tissue growth, differentiation, metabolic modulation, and cancer development. In prostate cancer, autophagy has a pivotal role in the regulation of apoptosis and disease progression. Several molecular pathways are involved, including PI3K/AKT/mTOR.

Background: The mortality rate following pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) has been decreasing over the past few years; nonetheless, the morbidity rate remains elevated. The most common complications after PD are post-operative pancreatic fistula (POPF) and delayed gastric emptying (DGE) syndrome. The issue as to which is the best reconstruction method for the treatment of the pancreatic remnant after PD is still a matter of debate.
