Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of three minimally invasive techniques for managing patients with myofascial pain dysfunction, determine their association with sociodemographic factors, habits, medication usage, comorbidities, treatment history, pain duration, complaint intensity, and diagnosis limitations.

Material And Methods: This five-year observational study scrutinized 1,000 medical records from individuals treated at the TMD Orofacial Dental Research Center. TMD treatments were organized into Group 1 (thermotherapy, exercises, and CBT), Group 2 (Group 1 plus intramuscular manual therapy), and Group 3 (Group 1 and Group 2 plus occlusal appliances) and correlated with sociodemographic factors, habits, prior medication usage, comorbidities, history of prior treatments, duration of pain, intensity of complaint, and diagnosis limitations or without limitations regarding the symptoms of muscular temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

Background: POCUS training courses are effective at improving knowledge and skills, but few studies have followed learners longitudinally post-course to understand facilitators, barriers, and changes in POCUS use in clinical practice. We conducted a prospective observational study of physicians who attended 11 standardized POCUS training courses between 2017 and 2019 in Japan. Physicians who attended a standardized POCUS course were surveyed about their current frequency of POCUS use of the heart, lung, abdomen, and lower extremity veins, and perceived barriers and facilitators to POCUS use in clinical practice.

The aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between self-reported preventive and curative orientations of general dental practitioners (GDPs) and the oral healthcare services (OHS) they provided to patients under 18-years-old. And in addition, to determine which patient, GDP, and dental practice characteristics predicted the provision of preventive and curative care. GDPs in the Netherlands using dental software program Exquise (>2,000) were invited to participate in this study voluntarily.

Objectives: The interruption to clinical professions' instruction due to closures from the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic posed a significant hurdle to clinical education and presented a necessity to shift how instruction was delivered to resume educational activities. This study sought to answer the research question: did the transition from in-person to virtual instruction for interprofessional education (IPE) have an impact on students' perceptions of team attitudes and skills to learn and work in interprofessional groups?

Methods: All participating first-year dental and second-year dental hygiene students enrolled in the campus-wide IPE course were invited to complete the Team Skills Scale (TSS) assessment before and after the course for two academic years 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. Paired t-tests were utilized to assess the change in student attitudes and skills from pre- to post-course assessment, and t-tests were used to assess mean differences between student cohorts 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.

Exploring the Role of Practice Managers in Dutch Oral Healthcare Practices.

Int Dent J

February 2025

Department of Oral Public Health (OPH), Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; KNMT, Royal Dutch Dental Association, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Introduction And Aims: The practice manager (PM) is a familiar position in Dutch oral healthcare. However, little is known about in which type of practice they work and what their responsibilities are. The aims of this study were to analyse the characteristics of oral healthcare practices that employ a PM and practices that do not, to determine responsibility for tasks described in the PM function description, and to assess to what extent the role of a PM varies between those with an oral healthcare and another background, and across practices with different characteristics.

Article Synopsis
  • mHealth is showing promise for assessing traumatic dental injuries (TDI) remotely, with this study focusing on the diagnostic accuracy of TDI detection through smartphone photos.
  • The study involved photographing the upper and lower anterior teeth of 153 participants, and the images were evaluated independently by dental professionals to determine how accurately they could identify TDIs.
  • Results indicated that diagnostic sensitivity ranged from 59-95% for TDIs, with better accuracy for urgent cases and primary/mixed dentition, suggesting mHealth could be a valuable tool in emergency dental care and future research may involve enhancing photographic assessment techniques and integrating machine learning.

Most pediatric intravenous anesthesia in Japan is performed outside the operating theatre by non-anesthetists. The 2020 revision increased reimbursement for long-term intravenous anesthesia (Category 3) by anesthesiologists, but its impact on practice behavior is unknown. We analyzed the annual number of calculations for each category of intravenous anesthesia and their age distribution from the national reimbursement data for the three-year period fiscal years (FY) 2018-20 to elucidate trends in the pediatric age group.

JDRF/Wellcome Diabetes and Inflammation Laboratory, Centre for Human Genetics, Nuffield Department of Medicine, Oxford NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK

Article Synopsis
  • Type 1 diabetes (T1D) screening can help prevent severe complications by testing islet autoantibodies (IAbs) in children, especially since most cases don't have a family history; a single screening at ages 3-5 is suggested.* -
  • In a study conducted in Oxfordshire, UK, 134 parents were invited to participate, and 66 were recruited; almost all enrolled children (97%) successfully provided blood samples, identifying one child with T1D autoantibodies.* -
  • Parents generally supported the idea of screening during routine vaccinations, emphasizing that combining the two would encourage participation, although there are concerns about the amount of blood needed for testing.*

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent malignancy in the general population. To date, dermoscopy is considered a key tool for the diagnosis of BCC; nevertheless, line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT), a new non-invasive optical technique, has become increasingly important in clinical practice, allowing for in vivo imaging at cellular resolution. The present study aimed to investigate the possible correlation between the dermoscopic features of BCC and their LC-OCT counterparts.

Dental treatment anxiety is highly prevalent worldwide. This is particularly important in the field of implantology since, in daily clinical practice, it translates into an increase in the difficulty of treatments, extending surgical times and having repercussions in the postoperative period. The aim of this multicentre, cross-sectional, epidemiological study was to determine the influence of anxiety levels in the postoperative period of an implant treatment on patients treated at two dental departments in Extremadura (Spain).

Background: The number and diversity of published peer-reviewed studies in the discipline of laser dentistry have grown considerably during the past 10 years.

Objectives: Within primary research, the development of protocols to guide and formulate clinical practice demands precision and ease of reproducibility. Errors in data acquisition and management may become amplified as the applied randomized clinical trials (RCTs) forge new levels of clinical diversity and predictability in the use of laser photonic energy in both ablative (surgical) and sub-ablative (photobiomodulation (PBM) or photodynamic therapy (PDT)) applications.
