Objectives: Flexible endoscopy does not have a system that can automatically evacuate surgical smoke generated in the gastrointestinal lumen. We aimed to investigate the feasibility and potential usefulness of automatic smoke evacuation systems in flexible endoscopy.
Methods: [Bench] After surgical smoke generated in the stomach was evacuated by the evacuator, the degree of residual smoke and gastric luminal collapse were evaluated to optimize the evacuator settings.

Introduction: Animal experiments with large living animals are essential for the development of medical devices and the training of surgical procedures. Swine are frequently used in animal experiments due to their similar size and anatomy compared to humans. However, it is well known that swine has less local bleeding than humans.

The first generation of these peptides (TDM-621) is currently used as a hemostatic agent in Europe. However, TDM-621 exhibits slow gel-formation and low retention capabilities on tissue surfaces.

Background: Stoma outlet obstruction (SOO) is much more common after total proctocolectomy (TPC) and ileal-pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) for ulcerative colitis (UC) compared to after rectal surgery for cancer. Few prior reports have evaluated anatomical risk factors for SOO. In this study we aimed to clarify the risk factors for SOO after IPAA, focusing on the anatomical perspective.

Although many studies have described the incidence and risk factors associated with postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), few have focused on the healing time. This study investigated the healing time and potential factors associated with the healing time of POPF after distal pancreatectomy (DP).

Therefore, this study aimed to examine the risk factors for incisional hernia according to various wound sites after hepatectomy. Patients from the Osaka Liver Surgery Study Group who underwent open hepatectomy using combinations of vertical and horizontal incisions (J-shaped incision, reversed L-shaped incision, reversed T-shaped incision, Mercedes incision) between January 2012 and December 2015 were included.

Aim: The impact of sustained virologic response (SVR) on surgical outcomes for patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of SVR on long-term surgical outcomes after hepatectomy.
Methods: This multicenter study included 504 patients who underwent curative resection for HCV-related HCC.
The incidence of pancreatic cancer is high among those in their sixties to seventies but low in those in their fifties or younger. Although there is no unified definition regarding the age of early-onset pancreatic cancer, previously published reports suggest that, compared to later-onset pancreatic cancer patients, early-onset pancreatic cancer patients tend to be detected at advanced stages and thus have poor prognoses, but they do not show significantly higher rates of patients with genetic factors. On the other hand, it has been reported that patients with familial pancreatic cancer and hereditary pancreatic cancer syndromes often develop pancreatic cancer at a young age.

Treatment options for IBD and diverticulitis have evolved in the last few years as a result of medical advances in technology and new clinical trials. Therefore, treatment options and strategies need to be updated to provide optimal care for patients.

Here, we retrospectively assessed VO as a risk factor for postoperative ileus (POI) after colorectal resection in patients with colorectal cancer.
Methods: This study included 417 consecutive patients with colorectal cancer who underwent elective surgery at our institute from January 2010 to December 2012.
Background: Survival of patients with cT4 esophageal cancer is dismal. Although the optimal treatment strategy remains to be established, two treatment options are available for cT4 esophageal cancers: definitive chemoradiation (dCRT) and induction treatment followed by conversion surgery (CS). However, little is known concerning the differences in clinical outcome between patients with T4 esophageal tumors treated with dCRT and those eventually treated with CS.

Background And Aim: Benchmarking has proven beneficial in improving the quality of surgery. Mortality rate is an objective indicator, of which the 30-day mortality rate is the most widely used. However, as a result of recent advances in medical care, the 30-day mortality rate may not cover overall surgery-related mortalities.
