The increased accessibility of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation following the COVID-19 pandemic and the publication of the first randomized trial of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) prompted the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to sponsor a workshop on ECPR. Two more randomized trials have since been published in 2022 and 2023. Based on the combined findings and review of the evidence, an international panel of authors identified gaps in science, inequities in care and diversity in outcomes, and suggested research opportunities and next steps.

Objectives: This study aims to better understand the perspectives of emergency medicine physicians' on the role that state-mandated, topic-specific continuing medical education (CME) plays in addressing knowledge gaps, its relevance to current emergency practice, its reported burden and costs of CME activities to emergency physicians, and its perceived improvement in patient care.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was designed by the Coalition of Board-Certified Emergency Physicians (COBCEP) and distributed in February 2023 to all American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)-certified physicians. Statistical tests of significance (Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact test) assessed the cost and time spent on CME as well as the perceived value placed on CME by ABEM-certified physicians to improve patient care.

Background: Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) provides full hemodynamic support for patients with cardiogenic shock, but optimal timing of ECMO initiation remains uncertain. We sought to determine whether earlier initiation of ECMO is associated with improved survival in cardiogenic shock.

Methods And Results: We analyzed adult patients with cardiogenic shock who received venoarterial ECMO from the international Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) registry from 2009 to 2019, excluding those cannulated following an operation.

Background: Night shift work is associated with adverse pathophysiologic effects on maternal and fetal well-being. Although emergency medicine (EM) residents work frequent night shifts, there is no existing guidance for residency program directors (PDs) regarding scheduling pregnant residents.
