Racing to disaster: A 10-year retrospective analysis of pediatric competitive motocross injuries.

Objectives: In competitive motocross, children as young as 4 years old race in groups on motorized off-road bikes on uneven terrain. We aimed to describe pediatric injuries occurring during an annual week-long certified amateur motocross competition between 2011 and 2021. Secondarily, we compared injury characteristics and medical evaluation by age.

Strategies for optimal management of pediatric acute agitation in emergency settings.

Acute agitation in youth is a challenging presentation to the emergency department. In many cases, however, youth can be behaviorally de-escalated using a combination of environmental modification and verbal de-escalation. In cases where additional strategies such as pharmacologic de-escalation or physical restraint are needed, using the least restrictive means possible, including the youth in the decision-making process, and providing options are important.

Building a framework to decolonize global emergency medicine.

Background: Global emergency medicine (GEM) is situated at the intersection of global health and emergency medicine (EM), which is built upon a history of colonial systems and institutions that continue to reinforce inequities between high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) today. These power imbalances yield disparities in GEM practice, research, and education.

Approach: The Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA) of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine formed the Decolonizing GEM Working Group in 2020, which now includes over 100 worldwide members.

Institution of a difficult airway response team for emergency department patients with anticipated or encountered difficult airways: Descriptive analysis of a 5-year experience at an academic teaching hospital.

Objectives: This study aimed to describe characteristics and outcomes associated with difficult airway response team (DART) encounters in the emergency department (ED).

Methods: We performed a descriptive analysis of a prospective, single-center database of DART encounters in the ED from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2021 cross-referenced with retrospective chart review. Adult ED patients ≥18 years old for whom a DART was activated were eligible.

Rapid recognition and optimal management of hemophilia in the emergency department: A quality improvement project.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a continuous quality improvement initiative at the University of Florida Health Physicians practice in reducing the time to administer factor replacement therapy (FRT) for hemophilia patients presenting with bleeding in the emergency department (ED).

Methods: The study, a quasi-experimental, interventional design, was conducted between January 2020 and January 2023. The intervention, implemented in September 2021, involved training ED physicians, creating a specialized medication order set within the electronic health record (EHR), and a rapid triage system.

User Experience of Access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and Emergency Contraception in Emergency Departments in the United States: A National Survey.

Background: Despite the prevalence of sexual assault presentations to emergency departments (ED) in the United States, current access to sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) and emergency contraception (EC) in EDs is unknown.

Methods: In this study we employed a "secret shopper," cross-sectional telephonic survey. A team attempted phone contact with a representative sample of EDs and asked respondents about the availability of SANEs and EC in their ED.

Examination of disparities in prehospital encounters for pediatric asthma exacerbations.

Introduction: There are disparities in multiple aspects of pediatric asthma care; however, prehospital care disparities are largely undescribed. This study's objective was to examine racial and geographic disparities in emergency medical services (EMS) medication administration to pediatric patients with asthma.

Methods: This is a substudy of the Early Administration of Steroids in the Ambulance Setting: An Observational Design Trial, which includes data from pediatric asthma patients ages 2-18 years.

Trends in point-of-care ultrasound use among emergency medicine residency programs over a 10-year period.

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly utilized in emergency medicine (EM). While residents are required by the Accreditation Council for General Medical Education to complete a minimum of 150 POCUS examinations before graduation, the distribution of examination types is not well-described. This study sought to assess the number and distribution of POCUS examinations completed during EM residency training and evaluate trends over time.

Trends in emergency medicine resident procedural reporting over a 10-year period.

Background: Procedural competency is expected of all emergency medicine (EM) residents upon graduation. The ACGME requires a minimum number of essential procedures to successfully complete training. However, data are limited on the actual number of procedures residents perform and prior studies are limited to single institutions over short time periods.

A consensus list of ultrasound competencies for graduating emergency medicine residents.

Objectives: Emergency ultrasound (EUS) is a critical component of emergency medicine (EM) resident education. Currently, there is no consensus list of competencies for EUS training, and graduating residents have varying levels of skill and comfort. The objective of this study was to define a widely accepted comprehensive list of EUS competencies for graduating EM residents through a modified Delphi method.

Creation of a novel course for the advanced emergency medicine ultrasound focused practice designation examination.

Introduction: The American Board of Emergency Medicine recently established a new certification pathway in advanced emergency medicine ultrasound (AEMUS). Eligible applicants come from a wide range of experience but must pass the same examination to become certified. This study sought to evaluate a novel review course targeting a wide range of learners for a new examination.

Distribution of core content coverage among three popular emergency medicine podcasts: A 10-year analysis.

Objective: Podcasts are increasingly utilized as educational tools within emergency medicine (EM). As EM residency programs seek to incorporate asynchronous educational material, it is important to ensure we are covering the full breadth of EM core content. This study sought to describe the distribution of EM core content among three popular EM podcasts.

Cardiac arrest: An interdisciplinary scoping review of clinical literature from 2020.

Objectives: The Interdisciplinary Cardiac Arrest Research Review (ICARE) group was formed in 2018 to conduct an annual search of peer-reviewed literature relevant to cardiac arrest. Now in its third year, the goals of the review are to highlight annual updates in the interdisciplinary world of clinical cardiac arrest research with a focus on clinically relevant and impactful clinical and population-level studies from 2020.

Methods: A search of PubMed using keywords related to clinical research in cardiac arrest was conducted.

Objectives: The Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) is a vital portion of any medical student's emergency medicine (EM) residency application. Prior literature suggests gender bias in EM SLOE comparative ranking, but there is limited understanding of the impact of gender on other SLOE components. The study objective was to evaluate the presence of gender differences in the 7 Qualifications for EM (7QEM), Global Assessment (GA), and anticipated Rank List (RL) position.

State emergency medical services guidance and protocol changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic: A national investigation.

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on emergency medical services (EMS) and its guidelines, which aid in patient care. This study characterizes state and territory EMS office recommendations to EMS statewide operational and clinical guidelines and describes the mechanisms of distribution and implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This study characterizes the specialty of emergency medicine around the world, trends according to region and income level, and challenges for the specialty.

Use of a novel pedal-operated compressor is non-inferior to the use of a standard hand-compressed bag-valve mask.

Background: The standard bag-valve mask (BVM) used universally requires that a single healthcare practitioner affix the mask to the face with 1 hand while compressing a self-inflating bag with the second hand. Studies have demonstrated that creating a 2-handed seal (with 2 healthcare practitioners) is superior. Our study aims to assess the efficacy of a novel single-practitioner BVM device that uses a foot pedal as the bag compressor, allowing both hands to be available for the seal to facilitate delivery of appropriate tidal volumes during single-practitioner resuscitation.

Breaking through barriers: the need for effective research to promote language-concordant communication as a facilitator of equitable emergency care.

Individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP) are at high risk for adverse outcomes in the US health care system. This is particularly true for patients with LEP seeking care in the emergency department (ED). Although professional language interpretation improves the quality of care for these patients, it remains underused.

Utility of COVID-19 antigen testing in the emergency department.

Background: The BinaxNOW coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) Ag Card test (Abbott Diagnostics Scarborough, Inc.) is a lateral flow immunochromatographic point-of-care test for the qualitative detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleocapsid protein antigen. It provides results from nasal swabs in 15 minutes.

Building a virtual community of practice for medical students: The Global Emergency Medicine Student Leadership Program.

Virtual communities of practice (VCoPs) facilitate distance learning and mentorship by engaging members around shared knowledge and experiences related to a central interest. The American College of Emergency Physicians and Emergency Medicine Residents' Association's Global Emergency Medicine Student Leadership Program (GEM-SLP) provides a valuable model for building a VCoP for GEM and other niche areas of interest. This VCoP facilitates opportunities for experts and mentees affiliated with these national organizations to convene regularly despite barriers attributed to physical distance.
