The presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COVID-19 infection is a detrimental combination for patients and can cause negative clinical consequences. The investigation aimed to compare sociodemographic and clinical parameters of COPD individuals hospitalized for exacerbations before and at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. An observational cross-sectional study including 222 patients with COPD was conducted in two stages: a survey and assessment of clinical and laboratory data of patients hospitalized from September 2022 to March 2023 (n=98) and processing of the medical histories of patients with COPD who received hospital treatment in 2017 and 2018 (n=124).

Infection

September 2024

Viral Hepatitis and Oncovirus and Retrovirus Diseases Unit, Department of Infectious Diseases, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, 00161, Italy.

Purpose: HEV is an emerging pathogen in Europe and was previously shown to be hyperendemic in areas of Abruzzo and Lazio, Central Italy. No systematic analysis of the HEV strains responsible for human infections over several years in Central Italy has previously been reported. Aim of the study was the molecular characterization of HEV from autochthonous hepatitis E cases occurred in Abruzzo and Lazio between 2015 and 2023.

Background And Purpose: The article's significance lies in the substantial rise in the risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD), necessitating the exploration of various approaches to rehabilitation and medical treatment. The purpose of the article is to detect the direct effect of physiotherapy for patients with PD and to identify how it helps in slowing down cardio-pulmonary failure, improving the posture, balance, bradykinesia and tremor.

Methods: The research utilised clinical data from 407 PD patients aged 30-100 years at the Central Polyclinic of Durrës, spanning 2011-2022, and included a systematic literature review and statistical analysis comparing physiotherapy outcomes with European Union standards.

Tracking the phylogenetic profile of HEV in swine and wild boar in Europe.

New Microbiol

July 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, Italy.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is prevalent among domestic pigs and wild boar in Europe. This study focused on the genetic diversity of HEV subtypes 3c, 3e and 3f among swine and wild boar in Europe as well as their circulation. Phylogenetic analysis and Bayesian phylogenetic inference were applied on the selected ORF2 capsid HEV sequences to co-estimate the viral circulation, the mean evolutionary rates and the dated trees.

Purpose: The study aimed to analyse the relationship of the rs4986790 locus of the TLR4 gene with the overall risk of preeclampsia, including both its early and late forms.

Methods: The study used standard genetic analysis methods such as DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and genotyping of the rs4986790 locus of the TLR4 gene to assess the association with the development of preeclampsia and peripartal stroke in 207 pregnant women from the southern regions of Kazakhstan from 2016 to 2022, of whom 103 had peripartal stroke on the background of preeclampsia (the main group) and 104 preeclampsia (comparative group).

Results: The results of the study demonstrate that the AG and AG + GG genotypes at the rs4986790 locus of the TLR4 gene are significantly associated with an increased risk of developing an early form of preeclampsia.

Article Synopsis
  • * EBI3 accumulates in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) when its partner proteins are low, and ER stress from protein buildup is crucial for chondrogenic differentiation.
  • * This study shows that EBI3 is important in early chondrogenic differentiation of MSC and influences ER stress, specifically by modulating the stress sensor IRE1α, which is also found in rheumatoid arthritis synovial tissue.

Enhancer RNA commits osteogenesis via microRNA-3129 expression in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells.

Inflamm Regen

September 2022

The First Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, 1-1 Iseigaoka, Yahata-nishi, Kitakyushu, 807-8555, Japan.

Background: Highly regulated gene expression program underlies osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), but the regulators in the program are not entirely identified. As enhancer RNAs (eRNAs) have recently emerged as a key regulator in gene expression, we assume a commitment of an eRNA in osteogenesis.

Methods: We performed in silico analysis to identify potential osteogenic microRNA (miRNA) gene predicted to be regulated by super-enhancers (SEs).

Objective: This study aimed to understand the role of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in CD8+ cells in the pathogenicity of RA and the changes after treatment with biologic drugs.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from 17 healthy controls and 86 patients with RA. Phosphorylation of mTOR (p-mTOR) and its clinical relevance were evaluated.

Introduction: Our aim was to evaluate the differences in the early hemodynamic response to the tilt test (HUTT) in patients with and without syncope using impedance cardiography (ICG).

Material And Methods: One hundred twenty-six patients (72 female/48 male; 37 ±17 years) were divided into a group with syncope (HUTT(+), n = 45 patients) and a group without syncope (HUTT(-), n = 81 patients). ECG and ICG signals were continuously recorded during the whole examination, allowing the calculation of heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), and cardiac output (CO) for every beat.
